Dental Appliance - Cleaning Recommendations.

Post by Starlette » Thu Jun 07, 2012 5:11 pm

Good evening everyone.

My dental appliance is a Silent Nite that I've been using for the last 3 years now in July.
I've been cleaning it with soap and a toothbrush everyday. However, I feel it is in need of some "deep cleaning" due to the black spots I can't seem to brush off in one area in particular. Recommendations would be appreciated.

Been meaning to post this for a long time. Finally did so.

Thanks.

I clean my Somnodent with gentle soap and a soft toothbrush every morning. The Somnodent is acrylic, so there's no spotting.
Avoid tooth extractions (including wisdom teeth) & train-track braces; find a functional orthodontist at http://iaortho.org/.

Give it a soak in peroxide and water.....that will kill anything. I clean mine that way every week or so and every morning I put it in a container with non alcoholic mouth wash to soak until bed time.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

@Sylvie - Ditto everything you said. I believe mine is acrylic also. However, I'm still getting little black spots on one side where the wisdom teeth are located.

@NanWilson - What part water and peroxide do you use?

I use a couple of drops of Dial lathered up for daily cleaning, then soak in clean water until bedtime. Then once a week, I use Polident/Efferdent for Partials. (My appliance has metal so I make sure that I use a cleaner for Partials that is safe for metal.)

@Josh = What is a partial? Mine has no metal. Just plastic and acrylic.

Scroll down till you see "Silent Nite", that's mine.

I just buy the cheap stuff 3% hydrogen peroxide and cut it half and half, I have an empty bottle and just pour half of it into the empty one and fill both up with water. My mouth guard is silicone, but the mixure will not hurt yours eiher.

As I understand it, Partials have metal. My SomnoMed has metal clasps and screws to make adjustments. They recommend that I only use Partial cleaner to help avoid any damage to the metal components. I'd check the manufacturer recommendations for your specific device.

One important item I forgot to ask is how long do you let it soak?

Just while I'm doing my bathroom morning routine, about 10 -15 minutes...I'm assuming you are asking about the peroxide soak..right. The mouthwash I leave all day, tastes nice and "minty" when I put it in at bedtime
