New CPAP user questions

Post by Maryb » Thu Mar 16, 2006 1:34 pm

I am a new CPAP user. I just got my machine two days ago (Resmed C8 Vantage auto PAP with heated humidifier and Breeze pillows). The first day after I used it my sinuses were irritated and draining all day. Then when I went to use it last night, one of my nostrils was blocked (congested) and I was afraid to use it with only the one nostril open. What do people do when this happens?
Even though I didn't use the CPAP last night, my sinuses are still a bit congested today. I will perservere but I'm feeling a bit discouraged.

It takes some getting used to. Make sure your humidifier is set high enough. If the air is too cold / dry, it will cause those irratations.

It is possible that using a nasal prong mask like the Breeze may not work for you. I have tried the Breeze and Swift, neither one worked properly for me. They were both very comfortable, but irritation and leaks were very troubling. I use the Activa and Ultra Mirage II. Unfortunately everyone seems to have different mask needs.

Welcome aboard, Maryb. Here you will find a wealth of information, support, humor, and just about anything about cpap. Take your time......it's a learning curve(so I'm told.........and I've got more of those than 40 miles of bad road). You may get used to the interface you have, and then again you may not.......most folks go through a trial and error period when it comes to finding the right interface for you. Hang in there..we've been there & done that!

There are gels for your nostrils to help. One is called Ayr and the other is called Secarius. Both are over the counter from your local drug store. Apply using a cue tip to the inside of your nose. Also try going up a size or 2 in the pillows.

Hi, have you tried at least once or twice to use your mask without the humidifier? I found I don't need it, and using it does cause similar problems to what you had.

thanks to all for the suggestions and support!
This experience is a bit daunting! But it helps to know others are going through it and to read how you all are dealing with it.
I got the Ayr nasal gel and I cranked up the humidifier.
I also started using a chin strap. All these helped.
Last night I made it about 2/3 of the way through before taking the mask off. I think I need to work my way up gradually to a full night with the device.
Today I had no congestion etc. And so hopefully, I'm on the way.
I am going to perservere with the Breeze mask but may get another (nasal) mask as a backup.
stay tuned...
