Battery Options for S9 Autoset

Post by BostonGal » Sat May 19, 2012 2:33 pm

Hi. I'm a newbie started about 2 weeks ago. I'm worried about not having a battery backup (simaliar to an alarm clock). I live in an old house and power outages are not uncommon...especially with the summer coming. I looked on cpap.com and the only battery was $700 and as I read it is not a battery backup...it's just a battery to run the cpap machine. Is there a battery backup option that kicks in - in case of power outage. Also, is there a cheaper version of the battery on cpap.com? Any luck getting the insurance to cover it?

Check out the options that our host (CPAP.com) offers:

https://www.cpap.com/cpap-machine/resme ... chine.html

Also, if you are a bit more handy, or able to bring it to someone who can do this, I put together a Battery Backup System, that several of us have cobbled together and use as our backup system:

Hopefully that will help.

I built my backup system using Johns guide that he linked to. I built it just like he built his and I'm ready for hurricane season or any other power outage.

I've been looking into this myself lately. Here's what I'm getting. See link.

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/DC-Con ... hines.html

I already have a bass boat so I have two marine batteries that will work. I have two Trojan SCS225's. They are 130 amp hour batteries. Used in a 24 volt set up they would most likely last for several days even using the humidifier.

Pretty cheap set up if you already have the batteries.

A computer UPS can run it for a very long time but will beep... They cost $100 or so.. You should be able to turn off the beeping as well.

-tim is referring to something like this unit. It should keep it running for a couple of nights depending on the size of the batteries.

A computer UPS will run a cpap for minutes to hours.. They are cheap and easy to find. The problem is they tend to beep when they don't have power.

A 750VA APC UPS will run a 40W CPAP machine for more than an hour. At lower power consumption levels, maybe even longer (or maybe less) and they cost less than $100. With an external battery (which the cheap UPSs don't support), you could run for days with a deep cycle marine batter from wal-mart.

It turns out that the smaller units may last longer since they are more efficient at low power loads so a 550VA may out last a 750VA.

Here's how I made mine: viewtopic/t78023/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=73 ... la#p671485

If you're not interested in doing this yourself, then maybe you have someone who could help you. Basically the task consists of simply removing the internal battery from a computer UPS and wiring the battery connector to an external battery in a plastic box available from WalMart. And silencing the buzzer. A good quality UPS will make the switch from wall power to battery power silently. A cheap one will make an annoying buzzing sound that will awaken you. If you go with a new UPS, make sure you hear it in operation before you buy. I have a cheap APC 650 VA unit that buzzes like an old aquarium air pump, so I didn't use it.

Just yell if you need help or further advice.

Does anyone have the information on the Respironics S9 Autoset DC Cable? I would prefer to go straight to DC without the 110VAC inverter involved. Can we used a straight DC connection to the S9 and if so, where can one get the connector that fits the S9 or is it proprietary? I have huge sources of connectors; all I need is a part number on the connector or specs on their DC cord.

Will put one together, try it out, and share the source(s) of course.

Great design BTW and exactly the way I would go with or without the DC to AC Inverter. Take the humidifier out of the loop when on battery like when travelling or camping... cuts down on the current draw.

thanks for the battery ups info.
Its still a little overwhelming but I am going to look into it.
Lost power for 5 nights last summer and it was pretty tough to make it through the day....

I note you have two X chromosomes. Those of us with the damaged 2nd X chromosome (Y) are known to on occasion amuse ourselves by tearing apart things like computer UPSs rather than behaving in a more civilized manner. Sort of like a dog chewing on a new pair of shoes. If you aren't up to wiring something like this up, perhaps you can coax someone into helping you out with the project. It's rather simple, but it has to be done right or it's possible to start a fire.

Thanks everyone. I didn't know it was so complicated (I know you make it sound easy, but I'm a city girl). Why can't they just sell a reasonably price battery. There is certainly an audience for it. Sounds like a good project for the summer...

I'm a newbie, but my plan is to use something like this http://www.amazon.com/PowerStation-Hi-C ... B005CL1OPC with this https://www.cpap.com/productpage/DC-Con ... hines.html I figure if I use it without the humidifier I"m good to go!!
