Stuffy nose and humidity

Post by Breathing » Tue May 08, 2012 3:21 pm

When I woke up this morning, my nose felt very stuffed up. I am using a nasal mask, and an S-9 CPAP at a setting of 15. I was thinking that I might to turn the humidity up a bit?
My nose does not feel dry, but very stuffy.

I have sleep apnea, but I don't snore. Never have. (I am also not male, obese or hypertensive)
I believe the screening criteria for sleep apnea is missing a LOT of people, who have a lot of unnecessary OSA related disease.

What setting is your humidifier set to? As long as you dont turn the humidifier all the way up or down you should be fine experimenting a little.

The humidity is set at 3.5
That is where the RT set it when she gave it to me.

I was thinking with a little more humidity it might thin the secretions and not feel so stuffy?
But I am not sure if this is just a normal side effect of a relatively high CPAP pressure (15).

It all depends on the individual's on personal needs in relation to humidity. Some people's nasal musoca and sinuses need more added moisture and some people need less...both could end up with congestion.
Which way are you? You just have to experiment to see. I happen to need lots of added moisture or my nasal mucosa really get angry. Forgot to add water to my tank a couple of times. Found out the hard way.
Just play with the settings to see which way your nasal musosa seem to lean.

My S9 has an auto setting for humidity and another setting for heat of water.

This is an optional setting available to Climateline heated hose users if the automatic setting is changed to patient. At "automatic" the temperature choice is offered without additional choices.
Since OP reports only the usually seen humidifier setting then I would assume a non heated hose is being used and heat only is being used.

my machine has separate heat and humidity settings, and a heated hose. I called my RT today to ask her about my stuff nose, and she suggested turning the heat down a tad. She said that if it is too warm, it might be making the tissue swell. Sounds reasonable. I am going to turn it down a little bit.
