addicition to cpap?

Post by dsir » Sun Jan 09, 2005 12:23 pm

I have been told that the cpap is addicting, once you're used to it, you can't sleep without it. Is this true?

Bearing in mind that "won't" is very different from "can't"....

Once you truly understand why you should use it, you won't try to sleep for one minute without your cpap machine.

Mentally addictive - yes, for me.

But physically addictive? No.

Dsir, I would be very interested to hear where that comment came from.

I do not have a medical training, however, one of my particular interests is addictions of all types, which I study, research and work through with people. I certainly know for a fact that it is not addictive in the true sense of the word.

As Rested Gal said once you have personally researched into the pros and cons of using a cpap, if you suffer from sleep apnea and the possible major negative side effects to major organs in your body, should the person suffering from sleep apnea choose not to use their machine, with that in mind, the person will often choose (or should choose) to sleep with the machine.

I have had my machine for approx 4/5 years, and I choose to use it for the above reasons.

It is a matter of common sense, not addiction and I sincerely hope this comment did not come from a medical practitioner.

CPAP is Addictive

Post by BetterBreathinBob » Sun Jan 09, 2005 4:36 pm

You bet CPAP is addictive- I love waking up in the morning feeling like I slept all night. I also love having lots of extra engery in the afternoon when I used to think about napping. No more bathroom breaks at night and I'm also addicted to the nice clear head without headaches that I have every morning now.
That's the stuff I can relate to, Then there is the improved blood pressure and less strain on the heart at night. My body is getting it's restorative sleep that it likes and my immune system is getting recharged every night like it's supposed to.

Thanks CPAP, I love your addicting ways.

If one really has apnea, I suppose you can argue using the CPAP is addictive in the same sense insulin is addictive to a diabetic .... except not treating APNEA doesn't lead to immediate death like refusing insulin.
