We got one for Christmas and use it all that time. We have Netflix and Amazon streaming setup, though Netflix wins out for anything but movie rentals. We also use an app call Plex that lets us stream movies off of our desktop computer. We just rip our DVDs and put them in a specific folder on the desktop and Plex Media Server looks it up and adds it to the library, very easy. It also should save us $$ on scratched DVDs.

We still have our TiVo with a DTV converter hooked up. Not sure I would bother with a new TiVo at this point since most shows are available on Roku.

Got mine. Like it so far. Pretty easy set-up, as previously reported. Sure makes Netflix more user friendly by making selections available on screen. It's going to take a while to explore the hundreds of channels available to discover the gems.

Thanks for the prodding, Liz.

Jay

Have a Roku player, love it.

One thing to add - you do NOT have to have a credit card to get an account setup. Little known fact: call Roku customer service and ask them to set you up an account without the CC. They will suggest you do use a CC but you can just tell them that you'll add it later and they'll set you right up. It took me maybe 3 minutes on the phone and done.

Also, make sure to search on the web for Roku Private Channels. Roku lets you setup your own channel to broadcast stuff and lots of people have all sorts of interesting private channels. You just have to enter in the specific code for that channel and it will appear just like anything else on the main menu. I have a couple channels of NPR stuff, a channel that is an aggregate of all sorts of news feeds, etc.

Liz, we dumped our satellite service over a year ago and are very happy with Netflix. We kept the DVD option, because we still do want to watch some things that are not being streamed yet. Other options for streaming include Amazon Prime. There are plenty of other channels available on Roku to watch, but some cost money and/or have commercials. I refuse to watch commercials.

Just my $.02.

Just something I'm interested in and would like some input. I dumped DISH a couple of years ago because the programming went to crap and it didn't seem worth the money.
Local over the air broadcast has deteriorated since we were all talked into buying new HD TV's that vary in screen size according to the broadcast. I still don't understand that, but I am completely frustrated with it. Over the air stations are broadcasting 1970's movies that nobody watched in the 70's.
Roku sounds like a viable alternative. Has aynone tried it?

I've been vacillating for a while between Roku and AppleTV... I like the idea of streaming from my iPad to AppleTV. Does anyone know if Roku does this as well?

I've had a Roku streaming player since Dec 2008. It's very easy to use/set up. I've used that in combo with Netflix and have been perfectly happy without cable. I also rent movies sometimes from Amazon's app on there if I feel the need.

I still only have the one Roku and it's held up great. (Even through my toddler throwing or dumping drinks on the remote!)

We now mainly use the Playstation 3 for our streaming needs in the living room but the Roku is still in use in our playroom/2nd living room.

Oh, and the Pandora app is great too for streaming music.

Uh OH, Roku has a forum...
I was looking for the private channels. http://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?p= ... 9754b2590f
Thanks everyone, I'm still exploring.
I'm not a big movie person but there is still a lot on it!
Glad to hear that Jay.

I have two Rokus & Logitech Revue. I think the Logitech Revue has more potential, but the Roku is more popular and a really a great choice. Netflix is a great channel and the DVD option is good if you want to watch some DVD's. Amazon videos are great. Hulu was okay, but there is a lot of duplication between the three. There are tons of other channels which vary from free to fee (from one time fee to monthly fee).

The quantity and quality of content available through Roku is mind-boggling!

Don't miss exploring the private channels, such as Nowhere TV. Go to:

http://www.thenowhereman.com/roku/

and then click on the yellow words "What's on Nowhere TV?"

A series of grey rectangles will appear listing the varied content piped through this one single channel!

It's easy to get used to simply watching NetFlix and Amazon streaming movies on Roku, and overlook all the other features which go way beyond anything on cableTV, and most of that additional content on Roku is free!

Regards, Nate

Thanks Nate. Good to know I can watch Charlie Rose on the TV whenever I want! Looks like some neat stuff there.

Randy, I just found this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBgck_Q ... re=related

Edited to change link.

Thanks, Liz. The video and the article he mentions were very useful!

Edit: I'm convinced, I ordered the Roku 2 HD
