My husband who is 60 years old uses a bipap that has been adjusted many times, but doesn't seem to stop his breathing obtructions. He can get as many as 1 -10 interruptions a night waking him and causing his blood pressure to sky-rocket to dangerous levels. We have been dealing with this issue for many months and I'M AFRAID HE IS GOING TO HAVE A STROKE BEFORE ANY DOCTORS DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. Yes, we have seen his pulmonary specialist who has had is bipap machine adjusted several times to no avail. We are currently seeing an ENT doctor referred by the pulmonary doctor as well. My husband has a deviated septum in his nose and large tonsils. We want to have surgery on both, but the ENT doctor is taking his sweet time about it. He is willing and optimistic about the surgery alright but wanted him on acid reflux meds first to no avail and now on flonaisse sp? to no avail. When we tell doctors about this problem, they seem so complacent about it. Most of the tme, they look at us as if they never heard of such a thing as if we are nuts. The most frightening thing about all this is what it does to his blood pressure, not to mention how sick he feels, hard on heart, and afraid to fall asleep in fear of more breathing interruptions and gasping for air.
Has anyone ever heard of this problem? And has anyone ever had surgery for a deviated septum and tonsils to open up his airways - and as a result of this was able to use th bipap machine successfully? We want to do the surgery but we sure would be devastated if afterwards he still stops breathing and the bipap once again does nothing to prevent these episodes.
PLEASE HELP. Any information will be helpful.

Phillips Resperonics Bipap and he has used a full face mask as well as a nose mask. I hope this is an accurate answer.

I have no advice, unfortunately, but I'm certain there will be others on line soon that do. Just wanted to let you know I feel for you and hope you and your husband can get some much needed attention from your health care providers. It's mind boggling they can be so complacent sometimes.

Re: sleep breathing obstruction
I had the deviated septum surgery and it made no difference in my CPAP therapy. The pressure remained the same before and after....HOWEVER...everyone's anatomy is different. The surgery may make a significant difference for him. You should get a second opinion from a different ENT.

Re: sleep breathing obstruction
The doc that knows he won't get to do the surgery won't be trying to sell you a nose trim.
Consultations are worth it.
