Tiara Topaz Chin Strap

Post by luvmykatz » Sun Mar 12, 2006 1:00 am

I got the Tiara Topaz adjustable chinstrap yesterday and it's great! The first one I had by Resmed was very flimsy. I'm a big and tall gal and it just slipped off my head. The Topaz is really well-designed. It has a generous chin portion plus 2 adjustable straps--one for top of head and one for back of head. It really works. Now this mouth-breather can keep her mouth closed! I can't imagine taping my mouth closed so this is the solution for me. If you're still having trouble with mouth breathing, you might want to look into this.

Tiara makes different sizes od chinstraps. If you are small the adjustable one may feel a little too big even though you can adjust it to keep your mouth closed. It would be nice if all sizes were adjustable-but it is easy to make any size adjustable with a pair of scissors, some vercro, a sewing machine and a few minutes.

Happy to hear that the Tiara works for you.

In the past six weeks I have used my CPAP every night for a minimum of 6 hours and averaging 8+. In the same time I have been battling mouth leaks night in and night out. I have tried every chin-strap I could find with the exception of the two Tiara models. I had two problems, I really hated the extra "stuff" on my face and if I had it tight enough to keep my mouth closed it interrupted my sleep, perhaps in two ways - discomfort and increased apneas.

Like you I could not, or would not, consider taping. The whole idea seemed absurd from more than one point of view and I was sure my beard (which I have had for 30 years now) would not permit it. Out of sheer frustration and fatigue I surrendered and tried it last Tuesday night. It worked, for me. I can't say for anyone else. I used 1" paper surgical tape doubled at first and then found some 2" cloth tape. I feel much better after 5 nights. The mouth leaks were killing my therapy. It still feels silly and I am sure it looks ridiculous but I don't think it's dangerous. It feels really good to feel so secure about no mouth leaks and to not have an additional piece of gear on my face. I have relaxed immensely over the therapy in these 5 nights knowing that it is now doing what it supposed to for me.

Good luck to you with the Tiara, I hope it works. The taping is not nearly so bad as it sounds though.

I am glad the taping worked for you. I'm not ready to go there yet. The Tiara is great for me. At first I didn't want to get it--so much stuff on my head and face! But, my DME had one for me to try and I like it. It's available on cpap.com, as far as I know. It's also on different cpap sites (just put "tiara topaz chinstrap" in search or "cpap" in search [google] and it will come up. There are non-adjustable ones for smaller people--a red one called Ruby and a blue one called Sapphire. I hope that helps.

David:

You're taping with a beard and 'stache and no problem?
