OT: Moses, the Easter Cat

Post by VikingGnome » Sun Apr 15, 2012 2:18 pm

My friend, Jim and his family, have a black cat named “Moses” (they found him as a kitten in a basket). Moses is a nocturnal cat, spending the night doing what cats do. When Jim gets up in the morning at 5 AM to get the morning paper, Moses routinely appears to come inside to sleep and eat. He’s about 10-years-old now and so predictable, if Jim’s a few minutes late getting the paper, Moses meows loudly to let him know he wants inside.

Over the Easter weekend Jim and his family left town. A neighbor agreed to look after Moses. When the family returned the neighbor reported that he hadn’t seen Moses the entire weekend. He’d vanished. Monday afternoon, the neighbor came over and said he thought he saw Moses dead on a busy road nearby. He’d been hit by a car. Jim and his teenage son went to investigate to see if it was Moses. Moses had been missing for three days. The cat was obviously dead. It was black and they were convinced it was Moses. So they picked him up and brought him home for a proper burial. Jim’s girls are 15 and 12 and they were devastated over the loss of their lifelong pet. So they had a little funeral of sorts in the backyard and buried him. Put a large stone over the grave to mark the spot and to keep wild animals from getting to it.

Tuesday morning, Jim went out to get his morning paper as usual and here comes Moses, rambling along to come inside for daytime sleep. Jim was so shocked. He scooped up Moses and took him inside and threw him on the bed where his wife was still snoozing singing “He’s alive, He’s alive, The stone has been rolled back.” In her groggy wake-up state she says, “You mean you buried Moses alive and he climbed out of the hole.” Inconceivable given she saw how DEAD the black cat had been with head crushed.

So now the family thinks they should give Moses a new name--“Lazarus”. Who’s cat is buried in their backyard?

Sounds like Moses was misnamed to me but it's probably not politically correct to suggest the new name.

Wasn't there a song about that?
"the cat came back the very next day, we thought he was a goner but the cat came back"
I think I sang about a 100 verses or more of that when I was a Cub leader.
