Help......DS550HS or S9? DS550HS noisy when breathing

Post by miserkris » Sun Apr 01, 2012 7:36 am

Hi

Whats a better cpap machine?

REMstar Auto CPAP Machine and Humidifier (DS550HS)
(or)
ResMed S9 Elite CPAP Machine ?

My pulmonologist prescribed the S9, but the supplier told the DS550HS is better and gave me that machine.

The DS550HS is great , it has auto pressure , but as I breathe I can hear the humming like sound in the machine. If I take deep breathes ,sound goes up and down in rhythm of the breathing!

Is this normal? What causes this ?
Thanks
Kris

Hi Kris,

Obviously, "better is relative." Both machines are great, but there will probably always be the PR vs ResMed controversy.

I used the S9 for and the RP System and I had the same experience. Both machines are quiet, but my experience is that the S1 has more conductive noise than the S9. I've only used it for nine nights and it has been fairly easy to get used to the "additional" noise.

Stick with it! You'll probably adjust quickly.

The Auto is more flexible... can be run as either an auto or as a CPAP... the Elite can only be run as a CPAP.

You may want to try some different options with the CFLEX before determining whether it's just not the right machine for you.

It sounds to me like you are hearing noise, including the sound of your own breathing, being amplified and then conducted into your head via the hose.

Would switching to an S9 help? Maybe, maybe not. If the noise is coming from the hose and you do nothing to change why the noise is being conducted into your head, it's likely that you'll still be noticing a humming/buzzing noise that is in sync with your breathing. And unless you were to switch to the S9 AutoSet, you're giving up the flexibility of an auto.

I've written about conducted noise issues in my blog entry Dealing with noise conducted through the hose. Maybe something I've written there can help you.

people always talk about noisy system ones. we have twin system one auto a-flex's and they are both super quiet. i guess you got a noisy one and i got 2 quiet ones, bought a year apart from 2 different sources.

I checked few times with the mask on....

The noise is coming from the cpap machine only. Mostly during inhale...more the inhale (if its deep) more the sound in machine.Sound isnt coming via tube!

Sound is like a "whooiiish".... It isnt loud but its has a rhythm . I can stand continous sound but not repeating intervals lol

Anyone else has had this experience , ie intermittent sound in the machine ?

Should I call my provider and ask for another one of same model or ask an s9?

Thanks guys !!

If you have played with the Flex settings and can't notice any noticeable change in the noise and it is disrupting to your sleep then convey this to your DME.

The DS550 (Respironics APAP) does it have the new backlight for the LCD screen? Older models did not and last spring Respironics added the backlight light and added noise abatement. The differences were really minimal in term of decibels but some people may find the noise to be more noticeable if they happen to be sensitive to certain sounds. Also it is possible that the machine you got is just noisier and maybe a lemon.

Try the different Flex settings..try cpap mode...try removing the filter (just as experiment)...if no luck and things are still disturbing then contact DME and see if they have a S9 AutoSet you can try. See if it happens to be quieter to your ear.

I happen to have been able to try both brand of Bilevel machines and the difference in machine only noise to my and my husband was extremely minor but the ResMed was maybe a tiny bit more quiet.
Can't say if it would be the same for the APAP models.

Worth trying though if your sleep is disrupted. Gotta get some sleep for the machine to work their magic.

Where is the machine relative to your head?
I found that if the top of the nightstand is a few inches below the top of the mattress, the sound
will be deflected or muffled by the pillow and edge of the mattress.
Very little of my sound comes through the hose.

the mfg date of system one's and m series are on the lower right corner of the serial number sticker on the bottom of the machine in the following format: 20120406, 2012 april 6. you casn always check when a machine was manufactured.
