Oracle 452 Oral Mask
Oracle 452 Oral Mask
I'm a serious mouth breather. The nasal masks simply do not work for me. I've been using the Resmed Mirage Full Face Mask for 4 years (with great success and with 100% compliance!) but wanted to try something less intrusive (and, let's face it, unsightly). I just got the Oracle 452 oral mask and I have some high hopes for this but I'm having a little problem with nasal leakage. It comes with nasal plugs which, it claims, won't be needed after a couple weeks of "training", but the plugs tend to get moist and then slip and leak themselves (yes, I've tried all three sizes). When I don't have the nasal leaks, the little thing works wonders! I'm pretty stubborn and will make this work if it's possible....any ideas?

Hi Crystal,
I have the Oracle. I found I had to cram the nose plugs up into my nostrils so much that I really wondered if I'd be able to get them out even with the pull tab. Any looser and, as you say, increasing slipperiness tends to make one or both get dislodged and start leaking, if not pop right out. I'm glad you mentioned the Oracle - I haven't used mine (the improved model - same one you have) in quite awhile. Might give it a try again on some night when I need to mouth breathe. I like the concept and found the new one to be definitely better than the original Oracle design. If you find nose plugs somewhere that are more effective than the ones they send with it, please post what they are. I'll look around too.
btw, your post about "family leave" law in another topic was wonderful. Great information!

Oracle Update/Mouth Breather
Am new to the site and am encouraged. Was wondering if anyone had any more experience with the Oracle. (I am a mouth breather who experienced many leaks with the full face mask, so the technician suggested the Oracle.) I am having trouble preventing the air from going down my nasal passages--any suggestions?

Andrew, I think I read something from Crystalblue in a later post (or perhaps on another message board) that she had found a nose clip called Speedo Competition Clip (or something like that) that worked better than the plugs Fisher & Paykel sends along with the Oracle. Can't recall if she found the Speedo clip comfortable after an all-night wearing though.
Surely there's bound to be some softer, more comfortable nose plugs than what the mgfr sends with the Oracle. If I ever get around to looking more myself, I'll let you know. Since the ResMed Ultra Mirage FF suits me well for mouth breathing when I'm congested, I haven't had much incentive to try to make my Oracle work better. I really should lab-rat it some more, because I do like a lot about it - I just need a more comfortable way to stop the nose-snort air leaks.

OK, a few more questions about the Oracle.
First, the best picture of it that I can find with a few quick searches seems to be the one on CPAP.COM (thanks, guys!). Even the manufacturer's website doesn't have a good one (I can't even FIND the product on the F&P website!).
However, the picture doesn't really give me a sense of what it'd be like to WEAR it. Has anyone got (or know where I could find) a picture of the thing ON someone? I can't decide whether it looks comfortable, or like a device you'd see on someone wearing a strait jacket, to keep them from attacking people by biting.
Second, from the look of the thing, the straps are probably still highly necessary to keep it in place. I think I'd like it better if there were some texture to the part that goes between your lips, perhaps something you either bit down on, or which fitted inside the lips to keep it in place. Has anyone heard of such a thing?
Third, since I am a database programmer by trade, I can't decide if it'd be highly ironic in a good way, or just too silly for words, that after spending 8 hours a day working on an ORACLE database, I came home and shoved yet ANOTHER ORACLE into my mouth.
Liam, all knowing and wishing all of these pretenders would stop using his rightful title of ORACLE.

Well, I found a picture at this link:

No straps that I can see, but it doesn't look like the most comfortable thing going, either. Plus, I'm not sure I want to end up looking like John Goodman after Spider-Man's gotten through shutting him up.
On the other hand, this might be an interesting counterpart to the Swift or Breeze. Use Swift or Breeze when nasal breathing is working, use Oracle when the nose is so stuffed up, dynamite couldn't penetrate.
Liam, whose brains, if dynamite, couldn't even blow his nose.

Uh... yeah... I meant something I could use with my CPAP machine... not some sick joke designed largely to part me from my money by forcing me to deep-throat plastic all night.
Or did I miss some important part of why that's a good option when no one has ever mentioned it on here before?

I just have this disgusting image in my head, now, of someone waking up, picking a green gumdrop out of their nose where it had gotten lodged, and then eating the thing.rested gal wrote:Wader, your noseclips pic gave me an idea -
Gumdrops! LOL
Having just (finally) had breakfast, this is NOT sitting well.

Liam, no wonder you have a hard time getting to sleep.
I'd never, never, never in a million years eat a green gumdrop.
But now, the red ones.......
Some months ago, I recall reading about a poster who was unable to use a Breeze. In addition to sleep apnea, she had REM Behavior Disorder. She woke up in the night chewing the nasal pillows.
Do you think you'll ever go to sleep again, Liam?
Wonder how big they make jellybeans?
