Before I call my sleep doc and have a hissy fit.....
Today I received a bill from them for $50.00.
Now, that isn't a ton of money, but it is money I do NOT have.
The cost on there looks like this:
POS AIRWAY PRESSURE CPA $95.00 and then there are two credits that bring that down to $30.
POS AIRWAY PRESSURE CPA $115.00 then credits that bring it down in total to $50.00.
Any idea what this is for?
I have a note that says my copay went up as of 01 -- so one charge is $20 copay and the other is $30.
The problem is -- I havent been to the doctor on any of these dates!
ALSO I haven't seen the DOCTOR in months, just the respiratory therapist which I was told had 0 copay.
Any clue what these mean or shall I call and raise some hell?
Need help with medical codes....

Re: Need help with medical codes....
Checking over my records these dates are close to when I saw the respiratory therapist.
I TRIED paying my co-pay those days and they specifically told me NO co-pay unless I see an actual doctor. So it appears as though it is time to call and raise hell.
Also requesting my medical info and switching docs! Liars aren't for me.

call your insurance company. i'm only speaking about my insurance but yours may be the same. my insurance don't pay for pa visits, tech visits, etc. they only pay for doctor visits. i have a feeling that the hospital billed the tech visit under the doctor id so they could get paid for the tech visit. call your insurance company with the date of service connected to the bill so they can look it up and make sure it was on the level. this could be fraud on the insurance company. i know for a fact that one time i went to the doc, he wasn't in so i saw a pa. my insurance doesn't pay for pa so the hospital went to an open referral i had for a specialist and billed it under his code because they would not get paid for the pa visit. hospitals do, do these creative billing things but normally don't have the nerve to actually charge the copay which you would recognize and know something was up. if they didn't charge you the copay they would get paid by insurance and you'd never know. the only way i knew was because i went to the specialist and was told i was out of referrals when i should have had some left. i did go in my local branch of the insurance company and she showed it to me on the screen.

Before you go flying off the handle, doctors can and do bill for some services provided in their offices. The polite thing to do would be to call the doctor's office billing person and ask them to clarify the charges. If it still sounds wrong to you, then ask your insurance company.
Doctors usually have staff that take care of billing, they don't handle it directly. And sometimes errors are made. Errors can be fixed. So find out the facts before you accuse the doctor of anything. And if you find the bill was incorrect or improper, the approriate thing to do is to let the doctor know and give the office an opportunity to correct it. Then watch the billing carefully to make sure it doesn't happen again.

You should ask what the charges are for and request from the billing party a copy of the actual bill with CPT codes. Then contact your insurance company see if they were billed for those dates and for what. The charges appear to be for supplies but those are very ambiguous notations. I work with medical insurance every day and mistakes can and are made so a phone call is definitely in order. You always have the right to appeal any bill and if you have no eob from your insurance then you need to know what you are being billed for.
