Burping after thyroid surgery

Post by Spirit » Tue Feb 28, 2012 8:22 am

Hello, my thyroid was removed last wendsday, cpap worked fine till last night, as my throat begins healing (anasteshia throat tube), as I inhale air, my throat fills with air, then I burp on exhale. Like this, inhale, burp, inhale, burp, inhale, burp. Called sleep clinic this morning, have an appt March 19th,. I'm on straight pressure right now of 11, don't know if I need to increase or decrease. I may try auto tonight 9-13 and see what happens.

Has anyone else have burping on exhale condition for any reason ? Thanx

The big block is gone and there is no need to push it out of the way. I would set it wide open (6- 12) and titrate myself.

Wow ! After thyroid surgery my AHI shot up ! AHI 6.0 !! Pressure set to 7-11,. Pressure median = 10.4,. Night prior to surgery AHI 2.3, straight pressure 11,. Leaks zero both sleep nights.

Very strange AHI increased, now I have no throat obstruction. Maybe my throat needs time to heal after surgery, will update again, few day's.

Yes, you're not giving things time to recover and there's more going on in that area than you might realize and you don't want to aggravate them... I would definitely talk to the surgeon, or at least my own doctor about what you're doing when... it could be weeks before things settle down and you can get a consistent 'real' idea of how they're going.

Hi Julie, have an appt with surgeon on friday, will address cpap concerns with him, I'm sure he can get the sleep clinic to move alittle faster. I have read that people experience swelling in throat after thyroid surgery for a few weeks. Just really strange, night I returned home from surgery cpap pressure was fine, now I'm burping ! Air pressure is definetly irritating my throat. Goodness what next, Lol !! Thanx friend.

Talked to sleep doc yesterday, got me in for appt today. She reviewed data, said I was maxing out at 11 alot since surgery, possibly due to throat swelling. She changed my pressure to 7-14,. She said, if I'm still burping, once my throat heals after a month, schedule another appt.

Oh, she also said when I had my thyroid, my pressure should have been 11-16, not straight 11, she wondered why pulmonary tech didn't change, I explained my other one broke, so I bought my own machine, which I set to straight 11. Afterwards hospital issued new one, tech set pressure, I didn't use new one from hospital, but my own. She was very cool about it, and say's well now you have an extra for spare. Give us a call if you have problems with new pressure setting.

Thought she was going to get upset, making changes to my own treatment, but she was completely opposite, very kind/understanding, I'm definetly requesting her my next hospital sleep appt

But sadly, I do remember tech telling me last yr, 50% of patients or more, give up on cpap.

Making progress, AHI is decreased from 8.6 to 2.2,. No more burping. Sleeping solid 8 hrs, sure to see better numbers as my throat heals
