I cured myself of mouth breathing by using the Swift FX and I used tape for a coupe of weeks. Then I found how to hook my tongue right behind the ridge in my gums, behind my teeth. Once I learned where to put my tongue, I had it made, because you create a sort of vacuum in your mouth and it will make a noise that wakes you if you open mouth then.
I have an INNOMED HYBRID on hand for nasal congestion with a cold, but haven't needed it yet, just comforts me to know I have it if I ever need it.

I thought the same thing. That's when I have the worst apneas too.

Odd. This is exactly the reason I mouth breath. Gravity drops my jaw down when I'm on my back. All my nighttime wakeups are when I'm on my back as well. I guess we are all different.

Sleeping on my back is one of the reasons my wife talked me into getting a sleep study (besides the fact that I'd quit breathing). I snore like a freight train sleeping on my back, but there are fewer pressure points and it's really comfortable. Now that I don't snore since I've gotten the machine, I can get away with sleeping on my back and I enjoy it. The down side though is that when I do this, my AHI's go through the roof! Oh well?!

And just to sort of get back on track with the post. Because of some of your very helpful posts, I will be trying out the Swift FX system very soon. I'll start by using the papcap, and if that doesn't work out, I'll try taping my yap shut. Thanks to all for chiming in!

Hello again all, this is an update for those of you who posted. And again, thanks very much for your input. I got my Swift FX yesterday and slept with it last night using my papcap/chinstrap. Absolutely amazing! No matter what position I was in I had no leak issues at all. Could not believe how unrestrictive this mask was. The only single issue I had was dealing with the exhaust air, and that's a fight I'll welcome anytime. It's great to be optimistic about a mask for a change. I'm not holding my breath though (pun), repeatability is everything, and as they say, time will tell.

I found that when I started using nasal pillows I also stopped mouth breathing. Unfortunately my high end pressure (25cm H2O) on my ASV unit tends to cause leaks no matter what. So, no nasal pillows for me. Sigh! I loved wearing them.

You might want to look into using some gause or "batting" material taped over the exhaust hole. It spreads out the stream of air without stopping the airflow. Just a thought. Of course, as you note, you might just get accustomed to it.

Hope you continue to have success with your sleep. May you have many happy dreams!

I switched to the FX about 2 months ago. The leak rate is 0. That is new for me in the 4 years I've been using CPAP. I do tape and don't care a fig if I have to because I'm sleeping so well. Gotta love that Swift.

I think you'll get used to the exhaust air. To be honest, it doesn't bother me at all. I love my FX too.

JohnB thanks for the recommendations. Right now I'm still in the "keeping my fingers crossed" mode. You know what they say about when something seems too good to be true! After using the Mirage Quattro for a couple of months, this is almost like not having anything at all on my face...kinda' like the speedo of masks!!! Of course I was using my papcap, but I can attest to what you said, I really had no issue opening my mouth. My tongue pretty much stayed plastered to the roof of my mouth. In addition to all that, I had absolutely no problem with dry mouth/throat, and the humidifier used about half the water it usually does. Besides all that, when I got an itch...I COULD scratch it with no problem! This sleeping through the night stuff is pretty cool! Looking forward to bedtime is quite a departure for me. But I still think the best part of all of this...is how well my wife is sleeping since I've started this therapy!!! Sweet dreams to all!
