Patient Satisfaction Survey

Post by NightHawkeye » Wed Mar 01, 2006 1:26 pm

Given the issues expressed by some members of this forum dealing with health care providers, one might naturally wonder just what a customer satisfaction survey designed to improve service might look like . . .

See my post about compliance

These folks know I exist once a year when they call to ask if I want anything and I don't reply (I will this time, I'm COMPLIANT).

NightHawkeye,
Yes, I got one about two months after having my Sleep Study from the hospital where it was conducted. I got a copy of the sleep study results (not from hospital, sleep doctor, or my personal physician) but from the DME. I got on my computer and looked up all the terms and educated myself!!!! I was so upset, I wanted to fill out that questionaire and fill it with COLORFUL METAPHORS, if you know what I mean!!! I'm amazed at the lack of information, follow up, lack of concern and support from the medical profession. I learned more from the great people on this site, than anyone else. I also get a questionaire from my physicians office and hospital when I have any procedure done. How would you fill it out??????

It'd better than nothing. At least you can complain. Did you fill it out?

Neverbetter,
Yes, I did fill out the 2nd questionaire from the hospital where I had the Sleep Study done (6 month checkup questionaire). I was totally honest and told them how I felt. I gave examples of how they could help current and future patients understand test results and cope with OSA. How about you???

last visit to my sleep Dr. lasted 3 minutes...went like this..I told him what my problems were. He said "Call "joe" the dme therapist and tell him I said to help you out". That was it.....the Doc punts to the DME AND CHARGES who-knows-what. This same DME in the past , when told a nasal mask didnt work for me, shipped me a FF MASK........never came to check it out, never called to see if I had questions..no follow up whatsoever. I am very happy to educate myself and manage my own treatment in the face of this kind of care. Someone commented on a thread earlier this week that the internet was thru as it related to buying cpap. Well, I challenge that. The internet has eliminated middlemen in stock brokerage, real estate, travel agents etc. One big fat target remaining are DME 's that provide NO help and sell eqiptment at obscene markups. I say that cpap suppliers and HMO's will eventually cut out that middleman and there WILL be marketing to the end user...us. How many commercials do you see by the big pharma companies telling you to ask your Dr. for this drug or that drug? Hopefully thats where we are headed. Hopefully it will be a wakeup call for DME's to get their act together or become expendable if they cant bring something to the table.

Well, this is my story.
I have never seen a sleep Dr. yet. Guess I haven't had enough problems.

I did fill out one questionniare in a year and a half, from the DME.

Whenever I had a question in the early months on cpap, I would call, and they would call me back.

My MD, whom I really like, doesn't know a lot about sleep apnea.

My experience with the hospital for my sleep study was much the same as yours. I was told I had OSA (by the Nurse) after the test was complete and that a Doctor would call me to set-up a follow-up test for titration. They said I would receive the call with-in two weeks. I waited over 5 weeks. I called the sleep center and asked what the status was. That no Doctor had called, I was informed in a not so nice way that no doctor was going to call and that the results of the test was sent to the referring Doctor, my family Doctor. I called my family Doctor's office ( I know these people personnelly the office people and Doctor) they told me that they had not receive any report. They called the sleep center. The sleep center said that they had sent a copy to the attending Doctor. My Doctor's office said we are that Doctor and we received no such report. They then faxed an unsigned dictated report to them, then in turn the Doctors officed faxed to me. I read the report and started my OSA education of terms and definitions. I did find http://www.capap sight but not this forum until later. After reading on this sight that I could order a machine without the follow-up titration test if it was a Auto machine, with a prescription from my Doctor. I made an appointment to see my family Doctor ( cost $65.00 vs. $2000.00 for titration testin) explain to my Doctor showed him the BiPaP Auto machine I plan to purchase and said give me a prescription. He had never heard of this type of machine, he treats around 10 patiences currently with OSA. I explained the software and charts and graphs to him that the machine was capable of. He gave me the prescription and ask that after six months come back in and show me the results. He said he may want to purchase the same machine for helping his patiences. He also told me he thought that the cost and how these sleep study centers were doing business was a rip-off. After all this I received the survey for the sleep center for the Hospital. Needless to say I had much much constructive criticism to give them! This was long winded I know but to me this is total lack of professionalism! Thanks GLC

I had a very good experience with my sleep studies; due to work, I had both done on Friday nights. My doctor stopped in for a brief while Saturday morning just to take a quick look at the preliminary results and discuss them with me. All of the staff was extremely helpful in answering questions, and bringing up things to discuss that I didn't know that the time would be considerations.

But get a letter like that? HA! I'm just lucky that Bellevue Hospital didn't try to lock me up on another floor after my studies....
