Card reader error

Post by hecate » Tue Feb 28, 2006 11:29 am

Hi,

I just received my card reader from 2factors and all excitedly sat down to install it. I installed encore pro okay installed myencore okay, but the card reader is having problems. I used the installer for the encore pro and initially I got the red light on the reader when I inserted the card. Since then when i insert the card the red light flashed for a moment and I get a windows error "one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned.." I've tried restarting and uninstalling, but to no avail. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone know how to fix it? Anyone have a hammer?

Liz
Frustrated, I want my data.

Try this:

When you open Encore Pro, click on “Preferences” (upper right part of page), and then “System Settings”, make sure that “USB” is selected under Smart Card Reader.

That might be your problem. Let us know.

Checked that and that is fine it seems to be more of a hardware error. I did a search on past messages and DSM had a similar problem, but his was resolved by magically unplugging and plugging it back in several times. I don't seem to have that magic. I'm hoping someone else also had the problem and fixed it in a different way.

I'm currently installing it on my work computer and have several other computers I can try in case that is the problem.

Did you install the drivers that came with encore pro? They are in a separate directory on the cd.

If that doesn't work, uninstall everything, including encore pro and the drivers for the reader. Then install the drivers from the disk that came with the reader. Always install the drivers before plugging in the hardware. The Infineer software comes with a utility that you can run that will tell you whether the hardware is functioning properly.

I had an enormous amount of trouble getting the drivers to work. It ended up being a windows software error. It's very unlikely that the reader is malfuntioning, but the test above will tell you.

Cheers,
BP

I respectfully disagree with BP (sorry). I've not heard of anyone who fixed their problems by using the disk that came with the 2 factors reader.

Hecate, I am PMing you with some info I have typed up. Perhaps one of the "hints" can solve your problem.

Let us know if it helped, and if so, which hint it was.

I've managed to install it on another computer and it works fine. I used exactly the same steps. Oh well at least I have it working. Of course the question now is are there any instructions on what it all means in myencore?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I installed the card reader on my home computer with no problem. I think I discovered the problem though. I plugged in the card reader before i ran the installer. I'm all set now.

I managed to also find a description of the various graphs although a couple still leave me confused. My dependance of AHI on pressure seems to look funny. It says if I am set at 6 then I have an AHI of 1.7, at 7 it becomes 3.3, but at 7 it decreases back down to 2.7. You can see the graphs here http://www.poky.net/apnea/apnea.html.

It does look to me as if the treatment is working my sleep test had me at an AHI of 35 and now I'm down below 5.

Is there a mask leak rate which is acceptable? I have the swift.

Does the card get erased when you read it? Anyway to change it if it does?

Thanks
LIz

Your graphs look wonderful, Liz. As your pressure goes up, the apneas go down. To get the AHI further down, you might have to raise your lower pressure. I've got a similar problem, and for the time being, I've opted to keep my minimum pressure low.

I see a similar thing and just attribute it to the fact that the machine can't raise pressure fact enough to clear the apnea.

Until your machine starts registering LargeLeaks (LL) then you're probably OK. The Respironics algorithm can compensate for fairly large leaks actually and will move more air to keep the pressure constant. If you're like me, you'll be bothered by the noise and constant wind more than the machine will be bothered by the leaks.

There is an EXE utility called something like "Do not erase", in the Encore Pro utilities sub-directory that you need to run so that the card doesn't automatically get erased when data is read. Don't worry too much though, because your already downloaded info remains stored on your computer.

Regards,
Bill

On my PC it mattered which USB port I was connecting to. It ended up working when I installed at a powered hub.
