You may one of those people who can NOT sleep in a lab. My brother couldn't,
so his doctor sent the equipment with him for an at-home sleep study.
You may have to fight for it; but hopefully, your insurance may allow for it.

Sheriff
it looks like "CPAP Bob" from the Bob and Barbie doll set..

I did a take home study only, it had a couple on the chest (breathing), one to measure body position, an oximeter on the finger, a couple on the forehead for eeg.
The first night I hardly slept, the second I did - I agree with the sleep deprivation idea, and a lot of exercise to make you tired. (careful though with driving to get wired up, maybe get a lift). Watch the movie Insomnia with Al Pacino several times in a row.

if you absolutely cannot get a study done, you could get a data capable APAP machine (buy one direct second hand, no one is monitoring private sales as far as I can tell), an oximeter ($50), and if you are rich, an eeg (to discount complex apneas, though i wouldnt know what to make of the results). a night vision video camera to map body position to results could be handy.
