Teach your children and your grandchildren about personal responsibility. Continue to be the model of personal responsibility that you are. Expect it of all you come in contact with. Mention the phrase frequently.

May God bless you.

Personal responsibility does not mean you stand aside watch people who are sick and confused get screwed just so you can feel superior.
Personal responsibility means acknowledging all the help and information you got and passing it and what you learned on to others. It means being big enough to accept that you are part of a society and not a country club and accepting your adult personal responsibility to your community and country. As a great leader said "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for it". That is personal responsibility.

Such nonsense. JFK must rue the day he read that line that his speechwriters concocted.

I have heard that line quoted thousands of times by people who have never "done anything for their country" and have no plans of ever "doing anything for their country". I suspect that you are one of these along with "here, here". If not, please tell us what you have done for your country or what you will do for your country. ????

JFK spoke what became a mantra for thousands of dreamy-eyed idealists who "talked" but did not "walk".

Go work at a soup kitchen or a community relief organization. Go help a wheelchair bound acquaintance. Go tutor in a ghetto school. Go help a single welfare mother clean up her apartment, take her to get a makeover and some clothes, help her put a resume together and get job networking contacts. Spend weeks calling her every night to make sure she is up and will get to work on time. Go clean up a failing elderly couples filthy house and help them file applications for public assistance. Go to an after-school center in a ghetto and clean shit off the bathroom stalls and throw out filthy trash and paint the walls and paint the trim and repair the gutters.

Go do all of this and then you can talk to me about "doing for your country".

"Doing for your country" is a worthless bromide. Get off your butt and do something for a living, breathing human that you can see, hear and touch.

I served my country in the RVN (a war which JFK perpetuated, if not initiated) where my wife's cousin was KIA.

Therapist,

Why don't you dial it back just a little! It is one thing to desire to help and share experience with others (especially when it is asked for), but quite another when it is overly harsh, opinionated, and dispensed as the ultimate judge and jury. You want to help people and be supportive, right? Well, you might want to re-evaluate your 'bed side manner' because there is nothing warm and helpful about it, only cold and distancing.

John

Yes been there, Did that. WTF do you think that slogan means? WTF do you think "your country " means? It means all the people, the land, the air, the water, everything.
I haven't yet met "a dream eyed idealist" who hasn't walked their talk at some point in their life. Besides talking about it, protesting for it is "walking your talk" It is known as political activism and it keeps the greedy rich from stealing everything else from those people you are trying to help. In real life it is known as PR, something you seem to be really bad at.

Oh and "personal responsibility" is the buzz word used in politics to avoid doing what you just said you did, because it is those peoples lack of "personal responsibility" that got them into it so you can ignore their plight. Politically "personal responsibility" means you don't have to offer any social programs, health care or education to people less fortunate then you.

I echo DeltaDave's sentiments. I also served my country in Viet Nam. And have helped in a soup kitchen.

I have the feeling you may be all talk and no walk.

How did we get on this topic?!

I hope it's not my fault for singing, "A little less conversation, a little more action please..."

Does anyone ever imagine what it would be like if we actually had that cpaptalk "reunion" that we've talked about? Would it be the third world war?! Or would people be gentler in person than they are with their keyboards? Just something I wonder about...

Depends on who would show up SleepingUgly. Mix in a few of our less than favorite trolls at the party, and I'm sure there'd be some fireworks.

Don't worry. I usually get stuck working parking-lot-security detail, so I figure that's where I'll be for the great cpaptalk.com reunion anyway.
