CPAP Newbie Tired Legs Mask Help

Post by josiebluecat » Sun Jan 08, 2012 12:00 pm

Hello everyone...I was diagonosed last month and just started CPAP therapy about 2 weeks ago. I guess I am looking for support from those of you who have been through this agony and have come through it to regain their lives. I use a full face mask because I am a mouth breather - I don't mind the mask and the past few nights have slept a solid 5 to 6 hours. But the bridge of my nose is red and my eyes are also bloodshot and swollen. Someone is coming tomorrow to fit me for a new mask that does not have the forehead piece and they say this may work better for me. Has anyone else had this problem and/or used this other type of mask with succes? ALSO....do sleep apnea sufferers have problems with their legs? Sometimes...well, most of the time... mine feel like jelly, or they hurt so much I can hardly get up from the chair....or usually the couch which has become my best friend! Just hoping to find some encouragement from those who have been through this. REALLY want to get my life back and start having some fun again....but even walking out to the mailbox seems like a giant hurdle. Thanks so much for any support or suggestions.

Welcome to the forum.

Would you please take the time to formally register here at the forum and add your equipment to your profile like I have mine added (just below my post).. if you don't know how to add your equipment this link explains how.wiki/index.php/Registering_Equipment_in_User_Profile
Please use the text option because the image option gives us a tiny image and we can't tell which model from the image.

For your mask issues if we knew which mask specifically that was used, someone can offer more than general advice. No mask should be painful or create wounds on the skin and if they do then something is wrong. Many full face mask users use various additions to help with comfort. Mask liners are often used.
They help with leaks and comfort. Various liners are available and people even make their own.

Sorry, I can't offer any ideas about the leg thing. I haven't experienced anything unusual in regards to legs.

BTW hopefully your machine offers full data so you can use software to monitor effectiveness of your therapy. There is easily available software for many machines but we need to know exactly which machine you are using before we can point you in that direction.

Tired hurting legs can be a sign of Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). Did your sleep study give any indication of RLS or Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD). If I have a really bad night with RLS my legs can feel heavy and like I ran a marathon at night. This is something you should talk to you talk to your doctor about as leg pain can point to several serious problems.

As for your mask issue, please follow Pugsy's link to register your equipment. I use a full face as well and have tried several types and if we know what type we can help better.

My legs hurt, especially in the evening, before being diagnosed with sleep apnea. I sometimes still have problems with it when it's close to bedtime and I'm tired. the bipap has helped that as well as starting an exercise program.

I have sore legs but its mostly arthritis. Perhaps you are having problems with Restless Leg Syndrome? Talk to the representative about nasal pillows while using a chin strap to keep your mouth open or a nasal mask. I can't use either a nasal mask or ffm because it makes me claustophobic. I use a swift fx with a chin strap and that seems to work for me. There are so many kinds of masks its hard to say what she's bringing. There are even masks that cover the mouth and then have nasal pillows also.
