can I cut my white filters to fit smaller machine

Post by newname » Mon Jan 02, 2012 1:16 pm

I went from "Legacy" to M series Pro and the filters are mujch smaller. I have alot of the larger filters left over and would like to use them. 'Is it safe to cut the Legacy filters into smaller ones? Does this affect the filtering process? If it's okay to do this, I'll probably cut the gray foam filters also.

Cutting the gray filters is not a problem. It is essentially a uniform consistency throughout it.

The white filters appear to be sealed along the edges. I suspect that seal helps force the air through more layers of the filtering material. However, since the white filter is not essential, in your shoes I would go ahead and use it ... just change it a little more frequently.

Hope that helps.

Why is the white filter not essential? I'v e been on cpap 5 years and never knew that. Also why does Medicare pay for them if they're not essential?

With the Respironics machines the white fine filter is considered "optional" since the first filter inline is the gray foam filter. For some people I suppose it would be sufficient to use only the gray foam filter.
Since I see first hand how ugly that white fine filter gets with some time on it, I prefer to to use it to clean the air as much as possible. The added filter may benefit people with lung problems and help keep potential problems to a minimum.

For Medicare to pay for things...well sometimes there is no rhyme nor reason to what Medicare allows or disallows. I think that they also will pay for the Remzzz's mask liners and a heated ClimateLine hose. While not technically "essential" for some people, they sure do help some people do much better with their therapy and in the long run anything that helps with therapy is a plus for perhaps limiting non compliance and the health problems that non compliance might bring. Perhaps they feel like it saves more money in in the long run compared to what other serious health problems might cost.

Just guessing, but maybe the gray filter cuts out enough large stuff to keep the dust from damaging the machine. Adding the gray filter cuts out more stuff, pollen, etc. and helps you with allergies, etc. Unless there's a big cost, I think I'll take the cleaner air.

As the deer lady above says, the white filter gets yucky enough that I'm willing to pay to replace it every so often.

I found Ebay sellers who sell what look like genuine filters for cheap enough to not worry about the cost.

New...I plan to do the same thing. I have filters that fit the M series I don't use, so plan to "fit" them to my PRS-1...I'm finding I have to change my white filters way before the recommendation, so I've went through quite a few already, but as Arch says..you can order from Ebay (and I have!) to have extras on hand!
