Temperature Setting and Nasal Pillows

Post by indyzoom » Sat Dec 31, 2011 5:44 pm

Hey everyone, Happy New Year! I just switched to nasal pillows last night (Swift FX), and I love them! The only problem is that the air feels hot going in my nose. The woman at my DME (who seems very knowledgable) told me I could try setting the temperature to the 80 degree default, and suggested starting there since I had it set at 66, and she thought I might like it better higher since the air doesn't have long to warm up before entering my lungs.

I initially set it at 80 and immediately lowered it as it felt like it was burning my nostrils. I turned it down to 70, and it was still uncomfortably hot. I have it down to 67, and it's tolerable but still feels awful warm.

When I had the nasal mask, the air felt comfortable and temperature didn't seem to make a huge difference. Anyone else experience this with nasal pillows and have any suggestions? Could I turn the temperature down even more? I'm concerned about putting it too low and not getting enough humidity.

I'm posting so I will get a notification of your replies. I am waiting for delivery of my Swift FX and so I am interested in hearing the responses.

What is the humidity setting you are using? I use Swift LT nasal pillows, S9 Elite, H5i humidifier. I have my hose temp set to 80 and humidity set to 5. I do not notice the experince you mention.

I don't have humidity and temperature set separately, I leave it on automatic. Should I separate it? I didn't want to mess with it so as to prevent rain out.

My temperature is set at 77, regardless of the mask.
I feel a little cool breeziness with the full face masks and none with the FX.
The FX is more pleasant for me

If I were you I'd try adjusting them individually. Its worth a try and may solve your problem.
Good Luck.........

Ditto - adjust the humidity and temperature separately.

Cheers,

And finally remember that it's your nose. The lady at the DME talks to lots of customers no doubt. And her initial advice about setting the temp rather high (80 degrees) is undoubtedly based on what most of her customers find comfortable. But your nose is not "most people's" noses; it's your nose. And your nose apparently prefers cool moist air to warm moist air.

If the air feels too warm and is making you feel uncomfortable, then turn the temp down to where it's comfortable for you.

I have the same issue with the S9. Not nearly enough humidity.

My nose is cracking and sinuses swollen. I get five hours in before I wake up due to dryness.

I have no leak.

My temp is cranked.

I even use vasoline on the outside, gently apply nostril moisturizer on the inside and STILL my nose is cracked and drying and they tell me there is no issue. VERY frustrating. I am to the point of going back to my old machine which gave me rainout. At least there my nose wasn't cracking.

I have the same setup, but I haven't experienced any of those problems.
I don't have the temp. and humidity separated.
I had it set to 86 for awhile, but lowered it to 80. I'm comfortable at both settings, but I found that I had to add water everyday at 86, and only every other day at 80. Heck, one less thing I have to do, and it will probably save me $12 a year
