PLMs Management

Post by Bons » Fri Dec 30, 2011 2:09 pm

I discovered a way to prevent waking myself up all night from thrashing and kicking and whatever. During our infamous snow storm in October I slept in a sleeping bag due to the weeklong power outtage. And realized that I wasn't waking up at the foot of the bed, or waking up much at all during the night.

So I've stayed in my sleeping bag, and it's done the trick. I guess it works like swaddling a baby. No room to thrash and kick. Perhaps it also alleviates the sleep issues from post traumatic stress, since covered in the bag I may not be feeling vulnerable or exposed. Whatever, for the first time in my life I'm making it though almost every night without waking.

I'm glad to hear you've found a trick that worked for you. No doubt others will also learn from your experience. I know it can be very frustrating dealing with periodic limb movements. Unfortunately for my wife, mine are starting to surface during REM sleep. She's already yelled at me to wake up when I hit her. Oops! That's something I certainly did not intend. Fortunately for me, she understands and just awakens me and is not angry. Sigh! Getting older can be quite an adventure.

Anyway, it's great you found a simple solution that helps. Hope it leads to much better sleep on an ongoing basis.

I'm almost positive my husband has this problem. He doesn't do it every night, but often enough that it's a problem. He kicks and slams his legs down on the bed every 5-10 seconds for 1-2 hours. And it always seems to happen on the nights that I'm having more trouble sleeping, so he can keep me awake for hours.

I've got his snoring under control now with the bipap...Sleeping bag you say??? Hmmm...
