Lansinoh and Secaris

Post by Elle » Wed Dec 21, 2011 3:28 pm

I am expecting my new Swift FX any day and am worrying in advance of the nose sores. I had used nasal pillows 5 years ago and gave up because of the sores.

What I am wondering is should I start using the lanolin before starting to use the mask to prepare or wait for sores to show up? I am also not sure whether either Lansinoh or Secaris (or both) are to be used during use (every night) or only if there is a problem? Do either of them interfere with a seal? Thanks.

I use Lanisoh every night. Just a tiny bit before I put my mask on. It definitely does not hinder the seal (probably helps it, actually).

I also use it sometimes during the day. It's wonderful if you've got a cold... Totally helps the tender nose issue. I had a cold recently, and my nose was so sore that it hurt to wipe it. I was dreading putting the mask up against that poor nose. But I put on the Lanisoh and had no issue with the mask.

Initially I tried Ayr's nasal saline gel without any benefit and I believe Secaris is similar. I ordered Now's brand of pure Lanolin in a jar and the irritation has lessened. Next I intend to try alternating the XS with the Small pillow as the size seems to hit against the nostril in a different spot. Pugsy stated that she alternates pillow size. Since I ordered a tube of Lansinoh, I'll compare the two lanolins. Starting on CPAP these past few months, the challenge for me has been preventing nasal sores.

That's a good idea to change the pillow sizes. I tried the Swift FX on a couple of weeks ago and it felt great so I was tempted to go back to pillows but now that it is ordered I am worried about the sores. I am so glad I have all these tips now so it will probably be a whole new experience.

I'm new to this CPAP stuff. Where do you get Lanisoh? Will a drug store have it? thanks in advance for the help.

Wildman 2,

You can find it in a drug store or Wal-Mart. It's mainly used by breast-feeding mothers, so look for it in the baby bottle aisle.

Nasal pillows should not cause any pain and certainly not sores. If they do then something is wrong and most often people have things too tight.
Gentle pressure is all that is needed to keep the seal. Strap shouldn't pull the nose up to give "piggy nose".

At most, only minor tenderness at nostril area might be experienced since that area isn't used to having anything next to it.

Padacheeks barrel cozy is a nice comfort feature. I got it last winter to help with rain out and I discovered I really like the feel of the soft material next to my skin so I have used it ever since last February. I didn't mind the silicone of the nasal pillows and I have never used anything other than nasal pillows. I just liked that added softness of the smooth side of the barrel cozy. If you like the Swift FX well enough to use it often, you might want to check out the barrel cozy.

I use Lansinoh each night I use the Headrest deconstructed, it definitely helps with the pillows sealing. If I don't use Lansinoh I for sure will have leaks and some times very important (so higher AHI).

I had a very bad cold for one week and my nostrils didn't get affected in any way with the frequent nose blow. I think it was because of Lansinoh.
