What can I try tonight?

Post by stunned1 » Thu Jan 06, 2005 9:42 am

I am trying very hard to get this to work for me. Has anyone had this problem.

I tried last night to sleep with my mask and a chin strap because after I relax and fall asleep my mouth leaks air and wakes me up. I still did not sleep well last night and somehow even with the chin strap I seem to be swallowing air. I tried to tighten the strap but air is still entering through my mouth. The night before I tried a full face mask but found it very uncomfortable and it would shift when I changed positions to my side and air would leak out the side of the mask. Does anyone use pillows or something to prop themselves up. I am trying to figure out if it is my position of sleep.

I am a new member and I want to thank Bob and Linda for their previous responses.

Hi Stunned,

Mouth breathing is common among cpap users. If you have a difficult time breathting through your nose, you may need to use a full face mask that fits properly, and give it time to become adjusted to wearing something that is big on your face.

Heated humidification really helps lessen mouth breathing. If you aren't using a heated humidifier, you might want to get one. If you have one, you should insulate your hose with a hose cover and turn the humdifier up. That may help keep your nasal passages clear and lessen mouth breathting.

If that doesn't work, and you are still breathing throught your mouth, you may want to try and oral mask called the Oracle. The Oracle is made by Fisher and Paykel. It is for people how only breath though their mouth. I haven't personlly used one, but I know Rested Gal has, and she really like it.

Please let us know how you are doing.

Regards,

Ted
