33 years without sleep

Post by tomjax » Sun Feb 19, 2006 10:37 am

This is amazing, if true.
A person going without sleep for 33 YEARS.
It counters everything I have ever known about sleep.
I thought it was impossible.

WOW! a real life Zombie!

I wish the article had some more information... at least a few questions that should have been asked and reported... makes me a little suspicious of the article.

If it is true, he would be a valuable subject for a study trying to determine how he is able to function.
Sincerely,
wading thru the muck of the sleep study/DME/Insurance money pit!

I wish I could remember where I saw it, but when I was diagnosed with OSA 8 months ago I was researching sleep disorders in order to understand what I had. I recall coming across a medical paper that said that most people who think "they don't sleep" are actually drifting in and out of at least a light sleep without them realizing it.

At least, I think that's what I read. Forgive me, but it was back when I was severely sleep deprived and my thinker wasn't thinking very well.

Yep, I'd bet that's the case with that man. Just think of how many people who go for a sleep study and are so positive that they "didn't sleep", yet the PSG clearly shows them getting into sleep again and again during the session.

On a board that sleep techs frequent (as just a cpap user, I lurk-read...that's their turf ) that same article came up. One of the techs said essentially the same thing as what you recall, Bill:

"Guy's gotta get at the very least frequent microsleeps, along with occasional naps...."

Thanks RG. "Microsleeps"; that's the term I remember reading. OK, maybe something did stick with me from my zombie days!

I know that, back then, I'd microsleep at work. Not on purpose; in fact, I'd fight to stay awake ... and lose .
