Sorry, I got "nastinetti" from the post above me. And no, i'm not putting you on, i'm seriously freaked out about this. I even have a friend of mine freaking out texting me because I told her to have her boyfriend use one for his sinuses, and he looked it up and saw all the stories.

And no, I've never been to Louisiana. Never been to Cincinatti either.

Let's get real here. Stop freaking out about this. There are plenty of real things to freak about if you are so inclined - this is not one of them.

Fact: The two deaths that occurred were people in New Orleans LA (NOLA) who used tap water without boiling.

Fact: Naegleri fowleri thrives in warm water.

Fact: Tap water in NOLA comes from The Mississippi River. The average water temperature in the Mighty Miss near St Bernard's Parish right now is over 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Your private well water in Illinois is probably at about 45 degrees or less. Way less, if the supply line between your house and well is a long one.

Fact: Your water comes from a well. The water that the Naegleri victims used did NOT come from a well. The whole darned place is on the Delta and below sea level, so wells aren't used - a well, private or otherwise, would fill with salty water. You don't do wells when you are on a coast, below sea level.

So basically, there really, truly isn't any real chance of you having got Naegleri fowleri. To put it in perspective, you have a much better chance of getting hit by lightning than having contracted N. fowleri.

Food for Thought: If you are on a private well, you should be having your water tested yearly as a matter of course, because other things (like E. coli, Salmonella, and Giardia) can and do contaminate private wells. Do you have your water tested? If not, then worry about that, because that actually could have importance.

So boil your water before using your Neti from here on in, and be scrupulous about cleaning and drying it, because while Naegleri just isn't gonna happen to you, bacteria and mold spores would be happy to take up residence.

More Food for Thought: Go find your drama-loving so-called friend who texts you alarmist junk and kick him/her solidly in the rear. Then sit down with some chocolate and a good book, and RELAX.

The above poster stated the facts well:

The water in Louisiana is pumped out of lakes and rivers where amoeba thrive. There is also no telling what else is in the water that is pumped out of The MS River (think of all the trash, pesticides, etc. that the water collects as it rolls on toward the gulf.). I wouldn't even really want to drink the water for the abundance of chemicals and carcinogens that it is ridden with.

Secondly I read up on these scary amoeba this summer when the teenage girl in Florida died from it after swimming in a river. From my reading I came to find out that most people of adult age have immunity to the micro pests, but a small number of individuals for some reason lack the immunity. Unfortunately the media runs with a sensational story and fails to give the public all of the important facts, which sends masses into panic.
