Is it possible to clean a tacky mask/pillows

Post by slojuggler » Sun Nov 27, 2011 2:33 pm

I've noticed that sometimes my pillows and headgear will accumulate this oily, tacky film.

This film makes me leery about using the items during sleep (feels creepy!).

Other items of similar age don't get tacky...what causes this tackiness?

I've tried using water with Bronner's, Pure and Clear, and Dawn (separately and small amounts) to remove the film with no success. Any tips? Or is it time to toss these items?

Thank you,
slojuggler

Soak in water to cover with a several good squirts of original Dawn for oh I don't know, 6-8 hrs maybe (I used to do that every day when I went to work without deteriorating the silicon), and see if that helps..it helped mine. Some boil the silicon parts in distilled water for 5-10 mins; someone who does this just rubs the oily film off after boiling. I now soak 20 or so mins (unless I forget and it's several hrs *grin*) in water to cover hard shell & silicon with a few good squirts of Method dish soap. I use the sea minerals scent as what little remains after my vinegar rinse is slight and pleasant. I also used a very soft toothbrush with full-strength Dawn for awhile to see if that helped and it does.

Wiping the silicone with a "baby face wipe" keeps the build up from happening. Then a wash in warm water & mild detergent every week or so will be sufficient.

It's a good idea to get spare pillows and other mask parts when your insurance will pay for it. Get a spare mask, too. They get icky after a while, and this gives you some spares in case you break something.

Once you get a spare, try washing the spare silicone parts in the dishwasher to see if they're dishwasher safe. I've washed my masks and water tanks this way for 7 years and get good lifetime out of them. I wash the CPAP stuff once a week and let the clean set sit dry until I wash the other set of parts the next week.

If nothing else works try boiling them for 10 - 20 minutes with a teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate (It acts as a detergent on the oil).
This works for me but no one else seems to agree.
My pillows are 17 months old but are getting a bit harder, I'll have to change them soon.

I was mine with Dial Gold Bar soap or if you can find it, Steris Hand Soap. I know you should not use something this strong on the mask and pads, but I have not had any problems and I still am using the original mask and pad that I received with the unit 70+ days ago. Nice and clean feeling (like new) and I wash them daily ( although I rotate through three masks).
