cm pressure question

Post by Starlette » Sat Nov 26, 2011 10:51 am

Happy Saturday!

Just wondering, do we ever get to the point of needing to "reduce" our pressure.
I tweaked my machine by disabling c-flex and turned on system resistance to x1.
This morning, I have morning headache. Just thinking I'm getting "too" much air.

I may be wrong but I think that resistance setting only applies to Respironics masks. My husband uses the same mask as you, a Resmed UMFF so we have that setting on 0. I'd like confirmation on that please?

Starlette, what's going on that you are changing your settings? Yes, sometimes we do need to decrease our pressure, but without understanding why you are changing things I cannot comment on that. Too much air/too high a pressure results in a higher AHI for me.

DoriC,

You are correct. According to this excerpt from CPAP.com on the PR System One Machine page:

System One Resistance Control
Respironics wanted a machine to achieve optimal pressure no matter which mask is used. Resistance Control is the solution, a numbering system on all of Respironics CPAP masks based on variable resistance characteristics. Each number instructs the device to compensate for different mask types. The result? A consistent and reliable pressure enhanced with all the benefits of Flex Technology no matter which mask is used.

I adjust my settings time to time hoping one morning I'll wake up with my AHIs down to 0.X and be consistent.
Maybe, I need to come to a place where I'm more concerned about how I feel more so rather than what my AHIs look like the previous night.
Anotherwords, don't let last nights data color my day as much as I do.
The headaches today were from poor sleeping last night and messing with the resistance setting when I shouldn't have. I'll leave that alone from now on. Unless, as stated, I get a respironics mask.

Starlette, this sounds real familiar, I'm guilty of the same thing. I did lower my pressure and now have slightly higher AHI's, however feel much better for some odd reason. Came to the conclusion I shouldn't get too wrapped up in the numbers game as well. For me waking up without a headache is a GREAT feeling, even if the numbers look a little higher than I would like for now. Good luck, and don't be too hard on yourself, this is a slow process at times.

Starlette,

For what it is worth...

A very wise Hose head on this forum (there are quite a few!), in one of the many posts/threads I have seen over the last 18 or so days of exploring everything I can explore, said that they felt that any changes made to any part of our CPAP set-ups (machines, machine settings, masks, headgear adjustments, etc...) should be given enough time to see what the change actually has done, no matter how slight we feel the change may be. Their thought was if you make a change to your CPAP set-up and you don't wait long enough for the results of that change, then make more changes, and more... it is like a dog chasing its tail. Which change did this or did that? Which one was good or bad or even did nothing at all? It can become a very frustrating circular process in my opinion.

In all honesty, I have to fight against the urge to constantly change or tweak things myself. I have to remind myself that I have already wasted 15 years doing nothing about my OSA, waiting a few days or even a week (now that I am on this life long journey) to 'see the results' of a change is nothing in comparison.

John,

That's a great analogy of a dog chasing its tail. I'm visual and I can see that. You're absolutely right.

Thank you.

Starlette,

Yeah, I am very visual too! It is funny, when you explain a thought or feeling to someone who isn’t visual, you can almost hear the crickets as they try to make sense of it all. Everybody processes things in different ways

When I was writing the post to you above it reminded me of the story about an old country preacher. His wife always thought him sort of vain because he would always practice his sermons in front of a hand held mirror. Time and time again she would see him do this and it always bothered her due to the normally humble way he carried himself. Finally one day she had enough and said something to him about it. The reaction she got from him surprised her as it was not defensive, he just lowered the mirror and closed his eyes, and then he smiled and started chuckling a little to himself. After a long moment, which seemed like an eternity to her, he finally spoke. Darling, he said, I can see how it might appear that way from your perspective, but truthfully all I’m really doing is making sure the message gets out to the one at our congregation who needs to hear it the most.

I am just like the old country preacher in the above post

John
