Thanks for the heads up, I just went and took my spares out of a wooden drawer and put them in plastic containers.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Wooden drawer may be a contributing factor in my case. The nasal pillow that discolored on me was also stored in a wooden drawer but I didn't have it in a sealed plastic bag. My other "extras" were sealed in bags (actually sealed in original bag which was inside another bag) but they have not discolored.

The dresser in the bedroom where all the extra stuff is stored is an antique (like 100 plus years old) and it has been oiled heavily so I could fix the drawers that wouldn't slide when I got it. It took a lot of oil to bring the piece back to life. Perhaps the oil was a factor as I oiled the crap of the thing inside and out.

My dressers are Ikea so lots of particle board. Some day I'll build a new set as I've recently retired and have a woodworking shop/art studio out back. I have to build kitchen cabinets first though.

Anyways... an antique dresser heavily oiled.... boiled linseed oil? That could definitely have a yellowing affect on anything absorptive near it. The wood itself shouldn't be a problem unless it's something high in tannins and the silicone is in contact with it. The finishes, however might be another story. Particle board and plywood both off-gas for quite a while, and I would think they'd be done after a year, but maybe in a confined space like a drawer..... I don't know.

Not linseed oil but probably very much like it. Special lemon oil to add moisture into dried up old wood and topped off with spray on Orange oil. Put the whole thing out in the yard and saturated everything. Husband thought I was nuts buying it at an auction (stole it) but after I worked my magic on it he says it is beautiful and understands how I saw the beauty beneath the dried up wood. It was handmade probably in the 1880s with marble intact. I also lined it with newspaper because I knew it would create a problem with all that oil. Some of the printer ink may have leeched out.

Usually my new mask stuff is kept in their original bags and those bags inside another heavy plastic bag. In my case the Pillow in question some how wasn't inside the bag and was just sitting on the clothes so it may have come in contact with the wood or newspaper. Other items never changed color.

Same here. Over the years I've had an occasional mask cushion or nasal pillow assembly take on a yellow discoloration even when never removed from the sealed bag the way it came from the manufacturer. Seems to simply happen to some silicone cushions or pillows over time, even if they've never been used and are still in a sealed bag. It doesn't seem to affect their performance although it does give them a dirty appearance even though they are just as clean as a "normal" looking cushion or pillow.

And hopefully you apologized to him as well. You could have approached him privately and showed him the picture rather than trying to embarrass him anonymously by having everyone say "ewww" and "yuck" to his pillows.

This is a reminder to all of us that what may seem like malicious intent may not be so.

This has been an educational thread. I keep my spare parts in sealed BPA-free baggies (who knows what else may be outgassing ) inside the carry package my mask ships in, so far no deteriorating of those parts. But, I have noticed that the silicon parts in the mask I was loaning out is cloudy/discolored...interesting...different cleaning method perhaps?

I was going to clean out a drawer for spare parts but I think the drawer is made of particle board on the inside. Guess I'll stick with inside the Hybrid carrier on a closet shelf.

I think some of the stuff they put in CPAP silicone to make it soft, pliable, etc., may make it degrade over time even without any nasty chemicals other than oxygen. It's worth thinking about with CPAP stuff you've stored for a long time. Oxygen is a nasty chemical in a lot of ways.

Or maybe the manufacturers deliberately add stuff to make it break down over time to make you replace it on schedule.

I wonder if this stuff should be stored in airtight bags? I've noticed a lot of CPAP stuff is packaged in containers with air holes. I assumed this was for purposes of outgassing. A lot of the stuff smells "plasticy" when new. Putting it in sealed bags or containers might not help. It might get even more yucky if whatever outgasses can't dissipate.

It's probably a good idea to keep it out of daylight or even fluorescent lights as well. I noticed that a plastic box sitting near a window degraded where the light hit it, even though it was located where no direct sunlight hit it.

I have to agree with ala508. You have identified yourself as a rude crude dude.

SU pointed out that your beef should have been handled privately. And it should have. And most people on the forum that read this thread know it.

very admirable to out yourself.
this was sealed ? makes me wonder what happened.
the seals on my old masks have white spotted. i thought it was from soap residue. now i wonder about that.
hoping we have a chemical engineer that can shed some light on this.
would be interesting to see how to properly store these.
