Post by bren1234 » Mon Nov 14, 2011 5:46 pm

Hello,
I have been on Cpap for three years now and for the last 3 weeks or so I am having difficulty swallowing..its as if my throat musclel
is weak. i have had a lot of Allergies lately and feels like a ton of mucos is in my throat so that could be it also but I just wondered if the air that blows from the machne all nite could weaken your throat...I don't know just a thought....any ideas..
Thanks so much..

One possibility is GERD/LPR...acid coming up the esophagus and affecting the throat and voice box. Another possibility is drainage from sinus or nasal polyps.

Hi Bren,
Never heard of weakening of throat muscles from cpap.

One possibility is that you may not be getting enough humidity in your cpap air. Drying of sensitive tissues can cause irritation. You don't have your equipment listed...but assuming you are using a heated humidifier...perhaps crank it up a notch.

Do you have a humidifier attached to the unit? Could be that the humidity is too high or too low. I agree with the previous comment on the sinus drainage.

One other thing to consider (not sure if this is the issue though since you have been on CPAP for some time) but how often do you clean your mask, hose, etc? Could be that you are coming down with a cold, and I have been reading some articles on lack of regular cleaning can increase this. I just got off a nasty sinus infection that I think was due to this.
