Mom Update....
Mom Update....
Hi Everyone, Here is the latest update about my Mom and her Sleep Study. She did great, slept really good (4 hrs at once) and only wake up twice the whole night. At home she is up every hour to 2 hours, so this was amazing. We met with the Doctor today to go over the results and her O2 dropped quite low. Her pressure to take care of the apneas was low around 8 but to keep her O2 up pressure was as high as 15 with 5 liters of O2. She is normally on 2 liters of O2 24/7. They had to switch to a FFM because at the high pressure the nasal pillows leaked and her mouth opened. With all this information now she is doing another study this Friday but they are putting her on a Bipap with 2 liters of O2 to start and going from there. She was disappointed in having to go back to the sleep lab but I think I have her talked down and understanding that this really needs to be adjusted and watched by a Tech, not something that we can mess with at home to start.
I will be so happy when we can get her on the right track and comfortable at home. I think she will be really surprised on how well she will feel. I have been reading up on Bipap machines and I told Lincare, don't be bring her any brick....he laughed and asked what I wanted her to have.

Re: Mom Update....
Good news Laurie.
Is this the same DME that you use? In the PR System One BiPaps.. the brick is the PR S 1BiPap Remstar Plus with CFlex+ machine. Just like in CPAP.
The PR S 1 BiPap Pro is full data as well as the PR S 1 BiPap Auto.
The PR S 1 BiPap Auto is actually 3 machines in one..It will do plain straight CPAP, straight BiPap and Auto BiPap.
With the need for higher pressures it will be so much easier on her.

Pugsy, She is not using the same DME as I did. She is using Lincare since they deliver her O2 and they will home deliver which is easier since she isn't driving yet. I told him that I wanted her to have the PS 1 pro Bipap Auto. He told me that he was ordering it so when she hit compliance that it would be ready and handy for them to deliver with out waiting.

Re: Mom Update....
Hope for the best for your mom. You are a wonderful daughter to help your mom as you are doing. I was also disappointed at needing to attend two sleep study visits. Sometimes, the sleep study techs can see that your apnea is really bad and place a mask on you (the same night) and come up with a proper treatment plan. But to me, I think the second night is really important because the first night is to be sure enough data is collected on your issues and problems and the second night is to be sure enough data on the treatment-side is collected and confirmed. Over the long-haul, if your mom gets sucessful treatment and is comfortable with the equipment, she'll forget about the second night.
Best Wishes...

I use the PS System 1 BiPAP Auto. It's a full efficacy data machine. And overall I like it quite well.LaurieP wrote:It's the PS 1 Bipap Auto...no pro in the title. My mistake.

Re: Mom Update....
Woo Hoo...Mom used the machine last night in her home for the first time and was very sucessful!!! She said she went to bed at 11, woke at 3:30 for a bathroom break and right back to bed on the machine. Woke when my Dad got up at 5:30 but fall right back to sleep till 7ish!!! She normally gets up and down all night so this is just great!!! I have already downloaded sleepyhead on her computer so I'm going to look at reports tonight when I go get her for the 2nd study at the clinic tonight. They are going to fine tune her numbers and O2 levels now that they have her on Bipap. My main concern now is if she is having leaks because she is using nasal pillows. Also I want to make sure that her O2 levels are up and staying there. I don't think during the day she is getting enough O2 because she is sleepy and napping alot. I have a o2 monitor coming and I made her an appt with the lung doc for Wednesday.
I really hope we can get this all straighten out before the holidays hit and we can just enjoy them without worry.
Thanks again for your encouragement and help!!!

That is wonderful news, Laurie!!
For new readers: Below is a link to the background on this story. Laurie and her sleep doctor did a wonderful job turning a probable "NO WAY!!" into a cpap therapy success story.
And of course, it all depended ultimately on Laurie's mom herself. She's proven herself to be a smart lady who really listened, put her initial reluctance aside, and decided to do the right thing for her own health.

Re: Mom Update....
Congrats to you Laura for being persistent but apparently in a way that didn't make your mom balk. Congrats to mom too for being gutsy enough to give it a try
Good luck!
Good luck!

Re: Mom Update....
That's great news! thanks for the follow up. I wonder how much more she will sleep. When I started cpap I would get up in the morning and by 9am I felt like I wanted a nap. So I had one. I did that for about a week. It was great to be able to sleep.
