I don't think my nose is supposed to feel like burning
I don't think my nose is supposed to feel like burning
And so my journey to finding a comfortable setup continues. The only mask I currently have, my third, is a Swift FX for Her, my DME having taken away the Swift FX they initially fit me with (too large) and the subsequent Opus 360. The Opus was merely lent to me to use while waiting for the specially ordered Swift FX for Her to come in. It was interesting to see the changes in how the RT has handled the fitting of masks since th first one; this time, her fitting was passing me the mask, telling me to put it on and adjust the straps, followed by a quick glance to check for any glaring issues. Once I got it home, I switched it over to the extra-small pillows.
The first night wasn't too bad, apart from waking up during the night with a painfully dry nose. Setting the humidifier back to 5, what I had to use during my first attempt with a Swift FX, helped. Unlike the first Swift FX, this time the pillows stay in place when I move and don't have the tendency to flop onto my lips. The extra-small pillows also feel more comfortable than the small ones I was initially fit with, less like they're trying to force my nose open when held in position (not shoved into my nose).
The second night was boring, but had a damp swivel and vents (grrr...) in the morning.
As for last night, I know that if I continue to use this mask, I will have to pick up some form of cozy for both the short hose and barrel. And something that's the right length for my hose. I want my winter scarf and mittens back. Last night, I got rainout, and the only condensation I saw was in the pillows and short hose.
But all this is either background or off on some tangent away from the main matter: I don't think my nose is supposed to feel like burning in the morning. It's not happening where I contact the pillows, it's happening further in, and I didn't notice anything like this with the Opus (although any possible association I have noticed could've a mere artefact of coincidence).

Get thee to the store.... pharmacy or big box....to the baby aisle. There, you will find the nursing stuff amongst which will be found Lansinoh (pure lanolin), used by nursing moms, but a godsend to nasal pillow cpapers!! A little dab on each nostril...edges and just inside....and you will have no more irritation or burning sensation. I was lucky enough to learn of this before I started with my Swift LT and have used it every single night. I have never had any irritation at all. One tube will last a year...you only need a teensy tiny dab.

Instead of the nasal gel I'm already using?

Not sure what you are using, but you might be reacting to something in it. Lansinoh is pure lanolin, and is safe for newborns...so it would worth trying. A tube will cost about $10 but will last a year. I think some stores may have a generic house brand, but be sure it is also 100% lanolin.

Tetragon,
OK, first I openly admit minimal knowledge on this issue. But I believe that Respironics changed the humidifier settings as part of a rain-out prevention move. And I thought I read somewhere that the older style of settings was still available in the menu. You say you're at setting 5 now? That should certainly be enough to prevent dryness and while I don't use a nasal pillow system, I do get a dry burning nose if I don't use enough humidity. Research that subject a little perhaps someone with direct experience can help you out. You may have more (higher) humidity options available.
Cheers,
Jamis

Re: I don't think my nose is supposed to feel like burning
I found that the Lansinoh ointment provided better "protection" than the Ayer nasal gel that I tried back when I was first using the nasal pillows. On a very rare occasion I also experienced some burning inside the nostril. To be honest I never could determine the exact cause. I have always pretty much maxed the humidifier settings out so it wasn't that. I just used the Lansinoh liberally day and night and it seemed to go away. Lansinoh is of much thicker consistency than the gel. Seemed to last longer. With time I got where I didn't seem to need the extra protection from the Lansinoh so I haven't used any in probably 2 years now.

The full name is "Lanisnoh HPA Lanolin." There are a number of "Lanisnoh" products and some people have trouble finding the right item.
You might be leaking air through your mouth and drying you out. Does your mouth feel dry? Do you have the software to check for leaks?

Re: I don't think my nose is supposed to feel like burning
I don't think it's a leak issue. My mouth tends to not dry out. My max leak tends to be in the 22 - 24 L/min range (I think SleepyHead is reporting total leak). Actually, it looks like I might be getting a lower leak rate with the Swift FX than I did with the Opus, and the Opus is what was used in most of my days with data.archangle wrote:You might be leaking air through your mouth and drying you out. Re: I don't think my nose is supposed to feel like burning
Tetra..I had that at first, but think mine was more to do with the pillow itself. It was only one nostril though, so not sure. I have not been able to find the lanisnoh (which I've been spelling incorrectly! ) but did find the Ayre gel and that has worked for me. Could be you need something a little more "coating" to help. One thing I did think of though, after the fact...I didn't wash the pillows before I used it and I wondered if perhaps that might have been the problem, some factory residue, ect...don't know. I don't have the problem now though. Try the lanolin and maybe that will help..if nothing else, coat your insides good with the gel and the go over with the lanisnoh outside and inside tips....hope it will help!!

Spelled incorrectly? From what I can tell, Lansinoh is the correct spelling. It looks like I can, in the worst case, find some form of Lansinoh at the local mega-toy stores.

I buy mine at Walmart(Canada) in the baby aisle...cost $10. Its in a purple box along with the other nursing supplies. Its used by nursing moms to keep their nipples from cracking..if its safe for newborn babe, its safe for us. It is called Lansinoh and it is pure lanolin.

I was leaving out a letter in there somewhere!! I wish I could have tried it, but our Walmart doesn't carry it...but then ours doesn't seem to carry anything a person NEEDS!!

Re: I don't think my nose is supposed to feel like burning
If your experience is at all like mine, I'm going to bet that the inside of your sensitive nose will toughen up within a month or two. I used Ayre Gel with moderate humidification in the beginning, and shortly thereafter found that I needed neither (I use just passive, or "passover" humidification).
But if you feel the need for a really heavier coating, Lansinoh is probably the thing to try, though pretty expensive! Call their toll-free number directly, and request several sample packets to be sent to you. I did this 3 years ago, explaining that I was experimenting with using it for my nose with cpap use---and I immediately received enough for a lifetime (4 pkts).
