Newbie. CPAP for 2 weeks and still snoring

Post by Rann63 » Fri Nov 04, 2011 7:13 pm

I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and have been on CPAP for 2.5 weeks now. I am not having a problem with leaks, but my spouse says I am still snoring at night. I have used a chin strap and it doesn't help. My CPAP is set at 7 and have the humidifier at 3 now that the weather has changed and we have heat on in the house. Any suggestions for how to take care of the snoring? Oral device perhaps?

Welcome to the forum.

There are 2 common causes for snoring still being heard.
1. Mouth breathing
2. Ineffective pressure (possibly from mouth breathing)

Are you aware that the ResMed S9 Autoset has easily obtainable software so you can see your reports and possibly tell if mouth breathing is allowing the pressure to exit the mouth and possibly impact therapy?
Chin straps help some people but they aren't like a vise and the mouth can come open.
Also...little lip flutter snores can happen.

If you haven't started to look at your data yet, I would download the software as Pugsy suggests. That way you can see hour by hour data for each night.

Also, you can see your leak rate, pressure, AHI etc onscreen when you wake up in the morning (or any other time).

If you can't see any of this info, it is because your "Sleep Quality" setting was set to "Usage," in which case you need to change the setting to "On." (We can tell you how to do this if you don't know how.)

Since we don't have all the data yet we can't ask many of the more detailed questions, but what is your AHI been with the snoring? Also, am I correct that you are using a straight 7 pressure, or is that your minimum? I thought I saw you had the S9 Autoset, so I just wanted some clarification.

I also have severe sleep apnea. I'm just wondering if 7 isn't high enough for you? Mine is set at 9.0 and I'm thinking of bumping it up to 9.2 or so. Maybe your throat is collapsing more often due to a low setting....Can't hurt to raise it a bit.

That may be working for you but I don't think we have any information that warrants a pressure increase for the OP.

No, we don't have hard data here, but I would think with the snoring still occuring and a rather low setting of 7 (in my opinion anyway) that that may have something to do with it.

If after 2.5 weeks, I was STILL snoring, I'd be on the phone with someone requesting some help. I know NO ONE called me to EVER see how I was doing, so you have to be proactive about your cpap therapy. We can only do so much here, but the OP needs to reach out to her medical people and get some questions answered.
