New nasal pillow mask help please
New nasal pillow mask help please
I am currently using the Mirage FX nasal mask which is okay overall, it is my first mask so I don't have a lot to compare it with. I had the opportunity to use a an older Swift LT nasal pillow mask and I liked the feel of the smaller mask, and not having my nose completely covered.
My main issue with the Swift LT is that the thing is very NOISY, compared to the Mirage FX nasal mask, which is almost silent. The exhaust was noisy, but so was just the breathing in and out.
Are all nasal pillow masks noisy, is this endemic to their design, or are some quieter than others? I really like the looks of the Swift FX as it is so small, and would appreciate any comments on it, particularly on how noise level.
I have a beard/mustache as well, I keep it pretty closely cropped and haven't had much issue with the Mirage FX, just wanted to mention as I realize it can play a part in some mask fits.
Thanks for you help!

Re: New nasal pillow mask help please
I used the Swift LT prior to switching over to the Swift FX. I think the Swift FX is less noisy but I didn't think the LT was horribly noisy. My pressure starts out at 10 so the venting noise may also be in relation to pressure.
There is a mask trial available. $14 pays for shipping both ways and you get to try the mask for a week.
Nice way to experiment without investing a lot of money.

Re: New nasal pillow mask help please
I personally didn't find the nasal masks any quieter than the nasal pillows. I used the respironics nasal cushion and resmed easy life nasal mask and also Swift LT, Swift Fx and Headrest [which is my permanent mask]. I think maybe must a matter of acclimated to the different exhalation methods?
Re: New nasal pillow mask help please
Kurt..I switched from a Comfort Gel nasal to the Swift Fx for Her and I love it! I honestly can't tell any difference in noise, but the overall "sound" of machine and mask together surprised me as I was expecting louder when I first started. The only sound I really hear (and I admit I have hearing problems!) is on my exhale, otherwise for me it isn't noticeable at all. I like the Swift because there's so little on your face. I'm only into therapy a little over 2 months, so the Swift was only my second mask to try. For me it will be my primary mask, although I will be trying the Sleepweaver come Dec. as a backup nasal. If you have the opportunity to try it I would suggest you do so. I can say this much...I started out using the small pillows thinking since I was a small person that's what would work best. I've since found out in the last week that the medium pillows work so much better for me in sealing and staying in place as well! Give it try and good luck to you!!

Re: New nasal pillow mask help please
I do not find my Swift FX pillows noisy at all, unless the vent is pointing at a nearby surface, in which case the wind hitting the surface makes a noise. I turn my head so I'm not venting like that.
Other posters have said that the vent can be noisy shortly after washing, but that this eventually gets better. No experience with that myself.

Re: New nasal pillow mask help please
I have a Swift FX and there is no noise with it unless the vented air blows directly onto something, as someone else said above. I use the medium size pillows. I got a Mirage Liberty mask (which is a Hybrid) to try a few weeks ago, and it is just way too noisy...like a freight train is running through the bedroom. I wanted one that allows mouth breathing or nose breathing for those times when I am congested with a cold or sinus infection. I have used the Swift Fx since I started with CPAP in Feb of this year, and i think it is far cry better than what was available in masks about 10 years ago. Back then the masks were so bad, i couldn't tolerate CPAP therapy at all, and had the surgery, which does not help and is quite painful too.
Check Janknitz' posts in her signature, and see if your mask is fit correctly, if you have a Swift FX mask. You might be getting noise from a poor fit.

I couldn't take the pressure on my nostrils with the Mirage Liberty. Now the Hybrid was a different story. I still use it off and on (mostly on). I have for 4 years.

New here...looking for some help with wind noise.
I've been on CPAP for almost a year, overall it's gone pretty well. Then the last few nights I've suddenly had a lot of trouble with noise from the vent in my "Swift FX for Her" nasal pillows blowing against my pillow or comforter and waking my husband. Those of you who have had this happen, what tricks do you have for preventing it?
Thanks in advance!

Re: New nasal pillow mask help please
Hi there. Just turn the short tubing a little to redirect the air flow from vent. If you want to block air from blowing on husband then you may need to use a pillow between you. If that vent is directed toward a pillow or sheet or comforter it is going to make some noise and blow cold air back on you. Just have to play with it. Take a moment to fill equipment in your profile. Will help in the future when you have questions.juraclap wrote:New here...looking for some help with wind noise.

Re: New nasal pillow mask help please
Thanks for the reply! I was looking more for preventative steps to keep it from happening in the first place - to avoid waking up myself and my husband with the noise at all.
I've had some success so far with pulling the covers down a bit (toward the foot of the bed) so they don't bunch up near my face and potentially get in the way of the vent, and wearing a long-sleeve shirt to bed for warmth to compensate for less covers up there. So far so good!
