How long should a CPAP last?

Post by randy ray » Mon Oct 31, 2011 9:00 pm

I have been using my Fisher Paykel CPAP for about 6 years. I think the pressure is going up and down but am not certain. I have been exausted for the past several months and am wondering if a new machine is in order? If so, apap or cpap? I don't recall having an option when I got my cpap.

I don't know why anyone would pick a CPAP or an APAP, all other things being equal. It is really nice having a machine that only cranks up the pressure when you really need it. An APAP isn't necessarily that much more expensive if you buy online.

Can anyone think of a reason to choose a CPAP over an APAP?

Maybe you could take your cpap machine to your local DME , better to take it where you got it, and ask them to see if there is anything wrong with the pressure. You can usually find CPAP machines on Craigslist, and sometimes they are quite blinged out. I think everyone should get an APAP, but I am faded since that is what I have.

At 6 years you are most likely near the end of the CPAP's useful life. If you have insurance a replacement should be covered. If not, the newer models have some nice features...buy one and keep the F & P as a back up.

I agree with LSAT. You are probably due a new one with most insurance companies. Some companies only require a doctor's prescription to get a new one, regardless of how long you have your current one. Again, be sure you research the one you want (data-capable) and tell the doctor to specify the machine you want on the prescription. Use your current one as a backup.

If you chose an apap......it can be used in cpap mode also. That is what I do...........I use mine in cpap mode and only change over to apap every couple of months for a week, just to check if my pressure is still where it should be. Best of both worlds.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.
