Adjust BPM to match your Encore BPM?

Post by sickwithapnea17 » Fri Oct 14, 2011 6:20 am

if your BPM is set to 10 (breaths per minute) but your Encore data shows 15 BPM average should you adjust the BPM to 15?

So you mean now you're going to let your Encore software dictate your machine settings? In your own way, SWA17, you're actually a pretty funny guy.

The answer is NO. The machine setting is your back-up rate in case you stop breathing.

The Encore software was displaying what your spontaneous breath rate was.

Back-up breath rate should always be at least 2 or 3 breaths lower then your own natural rate. 10 is a good back-up number so leave it alone.

well I tried it on 12 and I don't think I slept well on it, but I'm not sleeping all night on the machine

I understand that you're having problems keeping the mask on and sleeping, but the BPM rate is not going to solve the issue. If you have it too high, like 15 as you initially suggested in this post, then it will start conflicting with your own spontaneous breathing. And believe me, that will wake you up. So leave the BPM rate at 10...that's not your problem.

You do understand that the 18/14 pressures you're using are the base pressures.

And then when you have a central, the timed back-up capacity of your machine gives you an even higher spurt...to initiate your breathing.

I think it's that spurt, and NOT your base pressures that's waking you.
