Replacing Resmed ASV with Respironics ASV

Post by justbreathe » Wed Oct 12, 2011 3:00 pm

My DME called today and said my doctor requested to change the backup rate from 15 to 12.

The Resmed Vpap Adapt does not have a setting for this so they are ordering a Respironics ASV for me. I hope it works better for me.

Does anyone have the experience of grater comfort with tweaking the settings (under doctor care) on ASV therapy.

Which Resipironic ASV? There's the one in my equipment profile, then then there's the System One.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

I think it is the System One. It is being ordered from the factory and should be here Friday or Monday. They don't still make the older ones do they?

I don't know if they're still making them or not, but they're still around. I got mine in June. Wish I'd found cpaptalk.com before then, I would have known what to ask and may have gotten a System One.

When I later learned about System One, I asked the RT from the DME and she said there was no such thing. I did some research online to make sure I wasn't cracking up and when I saw her the next week I started to bring it up. She interrupted me like she was anticipating I would say something about it and she said "Oh yeah, after you brought it up last week I did some research and you are right, there is a new System One".

Bastards.

They may not make the older units, but I bet they have an inventory of those units. I would insist on the newer unit. I do not know if the newer unit is easier to use than the Resmed unit. It does seem to be a bit more "loose" about enforcing breathing. So it might not ramp up the pressure as quickly.

I am just curious about why you are making this change. The ASV machine you have is incredible ! Dan

I will check with the DME in the morning.

What is the main difference between the Auto SV Advance and the System One? Is it the data card?

On straight CPAP AND BiLevel I felt better and much more rested even though it did not address the central apnea I am having. An ASV is needed to treat them. The VPAP ADAPT controls my breathing so tightly It does not let me rest. I have a very large lung capacity and tend to breath more slowly and deeper than it wants me to. The result is that I fight it all night in my sleep and end up crashing by noon.

My sleep doctor said by tweaking the settings he can help me to get back to resting better with effective treatment. The VPAP ADAPT is fully automatic with no possible adjustments. It has only three settings. Expiration pressure. Pressure support for inspiration minimum and Pressure support for inspiration maximum. The rest is controlled by the unit. Therefore I have effective treatment that I can live with I have to change to another ASV unit that allows some adjustments.

All I want to do is sleep. I am awake now and like pre-cpap I am tired and don't feel like going to bed and sleeping will help. I have already logged 4.5 hours run time tonight. On the bilevel I would sleep through the night.....

I definitely prefer the Respironics ASV over the Resmed ASV, for pretty much the same reasons (I have the legacy versions of both). The Resmed ASV always seemed too fast to decide to force my breathing (I don't think it adapted well to my normal breathing style) and I couldn't adjust it enough to make it work well for me. I was able to sleep with it, but my AHI was always higher than I could achieve with the Respironics and I did not feel as well rested. On the Respironics, among other things, I set BPM=7 and Inpir. Time=2.7, which allows me to complete my breaths and end up with better airflow. I do better with Flex turned off. Both are good machines (at least the legacy versions with which I am familiar), but some individuals will do better with one than the other and it probably can't be predicted in advance.

Called the DME and he confirmed that he ordered the System one DS950.

CPAP.comʼs price for the PR System One REMstar BiPAP Auto SV Advanced with Humidifier is $3614.95. Sure hope I can get it paid by insurance....

I will be talking with VA and see if they will pick up and provide medical equipment for diagnosed sleep apnea. Hope it works like filling prescriptions for medication.
