Sleep Study Result

Post by Jim Eads » Wed Feb 08, 2006 6:11 am

I received my study results yesterday. My AHI was 90.1.

It's amazing to me that I can sleep that poorly and just not know it.

My machine will be delivered today. I'm sure that if I can get used to waking up every 40 seconds during the night that I can easily get used to a little mask on my face.

Looking forward to a good nights sleep!

Jim

Jim,

Good attitude! Good luck with your machine and therapy.

First night....

I used a REMstar Auto w/ C-Flex and an Aura mask.

I kept the mask on 8.5 hours. I kept waking up because of the mask but went right back to sleep. All in all I'm very happy with making it through the first night.

I woke up with a little headache. I don't really feel more rested because I kept waking up with the mask. I think I just traded apnea events for mask annoyance events but I'm sure that will go away quickly.

I feel kind of light headed today. It's like the feeling if you breathe too rapidly. Is this usual at first?

wow .. your first setup is very nice .. usually people go through several masks and machines before they end up with what you have .. well done!

Just the fact that you made it through the night without taking the mask off or shutting down the machine is a major accomplishment.
Your body will take a while to adjust (I had a similar breathing experience when I first started out) .. give it a week or two but remember that the therapy is an ongoing thing with ups and downs .. that's why we're all here.

Sounds to me like you're off to a great start!

I did my homework before purchasing the equipment. All the great informtion available, mostly on this board, helped a great deal.

It's my health and I'm going to learn all I can.

Jim, it sounds like you've got a great attitude and are off to a flying start.

Expect that it will take some time to adjust but that you'll eventually get to the point where you wondered how you ever slept without it. I was 4+ months into treatment and still seeing significant improvements. Those headaches will go away. In the meantime, pay attention to your straps and mask; maybe it is something as simple as straps too tight.

One thing I've noticed is that I've become much more sensitized to my apnea condition and any attempts to sleep without CPAP (e.g. napping on an airplane) I will wake up with the awareness that I couldn't breathe -- something I used to sleep through blissfully unware.

Conversely, putting on my mask and turning on my CPAP is almost like taking a sleeping pill; no matter how tired (or not) I am sleeping soundly within minutes of beginning my bedtime ritual. The nocturnal arousals (not the nice type of arousal!) from mask/strap/machine irritations are pretty much a thing of the past now; they are just a background part of my sleep environment.

I, too, just bought an Aura and used it with my Remstar Auto last night...slept for awhile with it on but I found it difficult to adjust from an Ultra Mirage FF in terms of sound.....you know the "DArth Vader" effect of the breaths....it was really loud!! The brochure mentions about 37dbl. Its like listening to a rapid set of ocean waves......I guess I'll try and get used to it. My bed partner didn't seem to mind..oh well. I was only able to keep in on part of the night due to the noise..but had a great night, anyway (AHI 0.1) but a high leak rate..think I might have spent some time breathing out my mouth, possibly.

Can anyone recommend a quieter nasal interface device?

Hurry and get the software and reader so you can make the treatment better. For a first nite you did great, Check and make sure you arent mouth breathing. I awoke about 10 times per night, now I only awake to roll over and secure my FF Mask and hose. I don't miss a beat or open my eyes.

Second night........

I switched to an Activa mask. It seems more comfortable than the Aura but is more obtrusive. Again, I had the mask on 8.5 hours. Woke up a number of times but not too bad.

Yesterday, after the first night, I felt a little tired all day but I did not get sleepy in the afternoon which always happens. Pretty good.

Today I feel great! Full of energy and ready to go.

I'm convinced that attitude plays a huge part. I convinced myself that this was going to work and I would deal with the mask if it was the last thing I did. It looks like I'm one of the very luck ones that took to this easily and will really enjoy the benefits.

Thanks to everyone on this forum for all the wisdom and information. It really helped!
