EncorePro 2: What is Periodic Breathing?
EncorePro 2: What is Periodic Breathing?
I am experimenting with masks. Maybe once in the past 7 months I've gotten periodic breathing with my Quattro FX FFM, but on the Mirage Liberty, I have gotten a couple of stretches of periodic breathing on each of the nights I have used it. What causes periodic breathing? Is there something I could tweak with the hybrid mask to reduce it?
Epworth Sleepiness Scale: 14
Diagnostic study: overall AHI: 0.2 events/hour; overall RDI: 45 events/hour
Titration study: AHI: 6.1; RDI: 27; CPAP pressures: 5-8cm
Not-tired behind my eyes and with a clear, cool head!

Re: EncorePro 2: What is Periodic Breathing?
PB Periodic Breathing or Cheyenne Stokes Respiration is defined in the clinical manual as..
Defined in PR S1 clinical manual as
"A persistent waning and waxing breathing pattern which repeats itself between 30 and 100 seconds. The nadir of the breathing pattern is characterized by at least 40 & reduction in air flow from an established baseline flow. The pattern must be present for several minutes before it can be identified as periodic breathing. No therapy adjustments are made in response to periodic breathing."
I see it sometimes myself and when I look at it up closer in detail it may or may not closely resemble Cheyenne Stokes Respiration.
There was a post not too long ago that showed real Cheyenne Stokes pattern. I will see if I can find the example.
Unless you have a huge portion of the night in this pattern and it really looks like CSR with a lot of centrals, it is something to be ignored a we all can have it from time to time. Nothing you can do with a mask to really control it.

Not the image I wanted and I will continue to look but this gives you the overall

And a recent example of what was called PB in my own report and obviously not true classic PB or CSR when looked at closely.

Re: EncorePro 2: What is Periodic Breathing?
The duration of each incidence of PB was 3-4 minutes.
On night #1: (5 hours of sleep):
During 1st incidence of PB: 3 CAs and 1 OA
During 2nd incidence of PB: 2 OAs and 2 Hs
During 3rd incidence of PB: 1H (This was when I switched back to my FFM b/c the struggle with the hybrid was exhausting me).
On night #2: (4 hours of sleep):
No incidences of PB
On night #3: (6 hours of sleep):
During 1st incidence of PB: 1 RE
During 2nd incidence of PB: 3 Hs (plus two more Hs in the two minutes before the PB and one in the minute after the PB)
Is my reasoning logical, here?:
1) Only the first and second incidences on night #1 look like they meet the criteria for CSR b/c that's the only night that OAs or CAs occurred during the PB, right?
2) I probably don't have CSR; I might have just been hyperventilating a little that first night b/c unfamiliar with the mask, right?

Re: EncorePro 2: What is Periodic Breathing?
If you look closely at the waveform itself (not the event numbers) and it matches the CSR wave form, it might be real but you have to look at the individual breaths to see..not the CA or OA number only. I think true CSR is CA only but I wouldn't swear to it.napstress wrote:Is my reasoning logical, here?:

Very likely.napstress wrote: 2) I probably don't have CSR; I might have just been hyperventilating a little that first night b/c unfamiliar with the mask, right?
Even if you had true CSR with the classic pattern showing on each breath...it is nothing to worry about as long as it is not happening for extremely long periods of time each and every night. I have had a few short PB green flags that if I really look close might be true CSR but only for maybe 3 or 4 breaths in the so called pattern. I would say that 99% of what little PB I have seen doesn't even come close to CSR when I look at each individual breath.
