White Noise - Not the Rock Group

Post by Jerry69 » Wed Feb 01, 2006 4:54 pm

Anyone try white noise to obliterate the breathing sounds of the XPAP and interface? I know it would work for me, but dw won't like it.

White noise sounds like rain and a brook all the same time. If you turn it up loud enough, you can't hear the sounds the interface and CPAP machine are making. I tried it this afternoon while dw was playing golf.

Check it out: http://jerrylester.com/posting/WhiteNoise.wav Will take a while to download.

Jerry

PS: Do I have to move to another bedroom?

My wife has a 'white noise' machine it is a dehumidifier beside the bed.

When my experimenting with machines becomes too disturbing, she set the dehumidifier to high & it is a noise she has learned to live with.

Interestingly, she doesn't really object to the noise from any on the machines I have tried, just the changes between them. There was only one particular model that she did ask me not to use again while she was sleeping in the room.

I would say that the PB330 makes the biggest change in sound but she is quite used to it. The machine that did cause the problem tended to have more of a high-pitched hum that varied (AUTO) during breathing. To me the PB330 varies much more but I can't hear high frequencies very well.

The other intriguing thing I have observed (am sure most folk here will agree) is that if I wake after about 2am, I can hardly hear the xPAP no matter what model. I have even checked to see if some models were still running !.

Hi Jerry, we use White Noise. Long before I started therapy, when we lived and worked in Atlanta Georgia, our adult son still lived at home. He worked swing shift and didn't get home until midnight or later. Before he went to bed, he would cook, watch TV, shower, etc. and made quite a bit of noise. So we bought an all-night noise machine (some of them cut off after an hour or so). It worked wonders and blocked out the unexpected noises nicely.

Now, we are hooked - even out here in rural Arkansas (to block out the cicadas, coyotes, and owls). When our electricity goes out, as it does quite often, we have to run a battery radio turned to static.

So yes, white noise works quite well to blend out the sounds of noisy sons, barking dogs, automobile horns, arguing neighbors, snoring, gasping, CPAP sounds, mask leaks, etc.

Maybe if you turned your unit on really low, perhaps your wife would get used to it. We don't like waves, or birds; we like soothing rain or a bubbling brook.

Amazing Forum!

Linda,

Amazing! Put up any topic on this forum and you will get a response! Really neat that you have used white noise, routinely.

Seems to me if you need CPAP, you are also smart?

Re: dw: But, but, if I don't turn it up very loud, it won't mask the CPAP breathing sounds.

Easier At 1 PM

DSM,

I know. Seems that after a bathroom break, you are sleepy enough that you can get back to sleep, even with CPAP noises.

I'm getting sleepy now, at 7:11 PM, just thinking about hooking up with Breeze.

LOL @ getting sleepy, but I thought you used the Aura.

Ya, but - you start out real low to get her used to the soothing sound, then you gradually bump it up some over time. Anything is better than an irregular sound that wakes you from a sound sleep.

(yes, I respond to almost anything)

This may sound a bit crazy, but be careful where you locate your White Noise machine. If it is too close to an AUTOpap it could trigger a pressure increase.

Crazy

Post by Jerry69 » Wed Feb 01, 2006 7:07 pm

My dw almost had a conniption when she saw me taking the boom box from the lanai. She was talking to her also-controlling sister on the phone when she exclaimed, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?". I meekly responde, "Just experimenting." Drives me f------ crazy. I needed the boom box to play the MP3 of the white noise I recorded. I've set it in the bedroom with the CD in it. I'll go to bed earlier than she.

Been married 51 years. Too late to change.

Any marriage counselors out there?

Aura vs. Breeze

Post by Jerry69 » Wed Feb 01, 2006 7:23 pm

Linda,

I use the Aura when I want a good night's rest. I use the Breeze when I want to experiment. You can adjust it 5 different ways, including the strap location. Plus, I've X-large and Large pillows that I like to try. I suppose that satisfies the engineer in me to be experimenting.

The Breeze IS the quietest of Swift, Aura, and Breeze, however. So quiet, in fact, that I can hear the CPAP machine. You can detect that I'm very sensitive to breathing noises. That's why the experimenting with white noise.

Jerry

I've been trying to guess what the d is in 'dw'

'Darling', 'Doting', 'Dear', 'Delightful', 'Delicious'

or

'Durned', 'Dangerous', 'Dictatorial', 'Dratted'

I used to use TV all night, before CPAP. The bad part when the programs changed, I would wake up.

Now I have created a MP3 CD-r of Nature Sounds Ect. I bought a small Boom Box that plays MP3 CD-r's. Mine will play five hours at one time.

I may fix up a DVD to do the same thing, A DVD playing MP3 should play 24 hours. All my DVD players will play MP3's.

My wife sleeps upstairs and I sleep in the basement, I would be sleeping outside, but my dog died and she gave away his old house. It' probably best, I always had trouble dragging that chain up and down the clothes line, and the niebhors dog kept eating my food.

Use data to optimize your xPAP treatment!
