Now what?!?

Post by ThirdOutOfFive » Tue Aug 30, 2011 6:11 pm

Last night my husband complained that 1) the mask made a rubber-on-rubber sound that woke him at 5:30 am
2) The machine made a new sound that was "weird"

All I know is that the mask keeps getting moved slightly during the night -- I guess when is roll over.

So, now what? I will do almost anything to get a good night's sleep, as I havn't had one since my first night at the sleep lab.

Be sure no water has collected in your hose.

No water in hose. Humidifier has plenty of water, and is emptied and dryed each day. I'm just frustrated, and exhausted. I bought some tape to use tonight to try to keep the mask in place. I am not happy, but I am committed to giving this therapy a fair shot. But, I feel like I am wasting my time and energy.

Do you have any Velcro on your rear strap? It makes a big difference to mask movements.
I also use a headband attached to the headgear so my hose goes back over my head.
There have been numerous posts on hose management.
You need to do all you can if your an active sleeper to keep the mask in place.

I'm quite sure I've had the same thing happen. The noise I hear sounds like a loud swishing noise. It happens when I move around I guess, and the nasal portion gets dislodged. I've learned to just move it around on my face just a little until it seals again... then I go back to sleep.

I hope that is all there is to it for you.

If we are facing one another, my husband will hear the sound of the air coming out of the vent in front of the mask. Also will hear the Darth Vader sound if my mouth opens and will hear the swishing sound of the air if I tweak the nasal pillows during the night.

The air your hubby hears is probably the exhaled air hitting the sheets or pillow...the mouth gushing air means you need to stop that by taping or going to a full face mask. If air is gushing out of your mouth, you are not getting effective therapy when using a nasal or pillows mask.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Thanks Nan. I knew all of these things because of this forum. I do tape now and we did figure out the vented air was hitting the pilow case.

ThirdOutOfFive, if it's simply a matter of the nasal pillows getting dislodged a little and causing mask-leak sounds, you might try stabilizing the nasal pillows at your nostrils a little better by adding a homemade soft, stretchy strap tied around your head to cradle the nasal pillows up against your nose. Like so (even though this picture shows a different nasal pillows mask than what you have) --

Image

The leg cut off a pair of women's pantyhose tights ("tights", not plain pantyhose) makes a useful, comfortable stabilizing strap.

Tying an easily adjustable flat knot behind head:

The added "cradling" strap doesn't have to be tight...just barely snug. Simply having it there helps steady the nasal pillows, much like holding a finger lightly on the front of the mask.

As greg-g mentioned, it can be helpful to figure out a way to hang the main air hose overhead so the weight of the hose doesn't tug on your mask when you move around or turn over. Here are lots of creative ways cpaptalk members have come up with to do that, without having to buy a hose hanger:

Thanks, all. Hubby was complaining about a noise that was coming from the machine as well as a mask noise. Don't have any idea what the machine was doing 'cause he didn't wake me up. Hit me with his complaints while I was trying to have breakfast.

I like the idea of the nasal pillow "cozy" == will give that a try.

I am very considerate of trying to accommodate my husband, such as by not facing him where the exhaust air will hit him while he's first going to sleep, etc., HOWEVER my main message to him especially when first beginning therapy was:

This is going to take getting used to for both of us
and know that I want you to tell me what bothers you,
but also know that there may be nothing I can do about it
and it may be something we'll just have to put up with.

Over the years he's gotten used to all the things I can't do anything about and I am getting excellent therapy and he's getting MUCH better sleep than when I was snoring - that's for certain : )) So what I'm saying is don't let how your therapy is affecting others affect your ability to settle into it - and not saying you are, but sometimes trying to over accommodate someone else makes me lose my way for what I need for me - which in this case is relaxing and learning what to do the same/differently for achieving optimum health.

LOL You are such a guy - complaining isn't from an emotional level - it's from a what the person needs perspective. : )

Need: Could you point that blast of air somewhere else?
Emotional: I miss you hogging my side of the bed since you've been hooked up to that machine.

LOL

No advice, since the others have offered great suggestions. But I do want to offer support/sympathy! My hub is sometimes awakened by strange noises associated with my Pap use. He was used to peace and quiet (I've used an oral device for about a year which helped me quit snoring.) BUT, there are going to be adjustments, and that's just the way it is.
