It would be helpful to know the location of the picture.

I shudder to think of all the flooded homes. Twice our basement was flooded when we were w/o power for days and I so remember the clean up - and THAT was CLEAN water, not muddy flood waters. *sigh*

I live away from the affected area, but was very saddened to find out that a beautiful cottage in Nags Head was destroyed by the storm. It was built in 1903 and was one of the classic beach cottages in the area, much prettier to me than the huge mansions that line the ocean now. My family spent several special vacations there and it came to represent Nags Head to us. It sat on pilings in the Sound, and to reach it we had to walk on a catwalk over the water. All night long you could hear the waves moving under the house, providing wonderful sleeping sounds. There were screened porches to sit and enjoy the ocean breezes, and a dock where the kids could go "crabbing", throwing a line with a fish head into the water and dragging it back with a crab on it almost every time. Very satisfactory activity for both kids and adults! You could dig clams with your toes, and put them in the outside sink to spit out their sand until dinnertime. I remember fondly the reaction of my kids when they first saw a soft-shell crab sandwich! How funny was their reaction to the legs sticking out the sides! We would take off our watches, watch no TV, and relax completely. It was lovely to lie in the sun with the most strenous activity being reaching in the cooler for a cold beer. I am so sad for the family who owned it to have lost such a treasure. Although it is gone forever now, it remains in my memories as a lovely place to spend a week or two in the summer.

Ah, Joanie, it is so sad to lose such beautiful old homes and buildings from the past. It is bad enough to lose them to severe storms but we live near a town w/no sense or pride in its history that tears down beautiful old buildings overnight, saving nothing from them, to replace them w/pretentious, ugly McMansions or mod business buildings and parking lots and it breaks my heart each time we lose one of the old places. Each time it is a business I make myself a promise to never do business w/them.

I am thankful for several things about this storm.

1. It downgraded itself to a TS BEFORE it moved into CT. I can't even imagine IF the winds were stronger than they were. CT is just not ready for anything much stronger when you look at the damage these winds & rain did.

2. It was nowhere near as hot as the Gulf Coast was when Katrina moved in.

So I will ask that the moderators of this fine forum move this post to the Tropical Storm section of the forum.

Good Night Irene.

Living in Branford, my parents won't have power until this Tuesday.
I called my mother, asked if I could help, got the classic Jewish Mother's response:
"Oh, don't mind me, I'll just sit here in the dark . . ."

No, not one of mine. Wish it was. Looks like shroom cloud after a baby nuke or asteroid, doesn't it?

There's a website showing which CT towns have power, or if they don't, which ones they expect to restore. Branford is listed dead last. Next Tuesday with a bullet. I guess I should go out there tonight, pick up a small honda generator from Home Depot or Lowes — if they have any left — and hook my mom up, at least her fridge, the TV and a single reading lamp.

Before I plug her in, gonna make her promise not to give me anymore grief about my quitting college (quashing her dreams for me to become an anesthesiologist), and going into show biz instead. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to have some real leverage over her, and I ain't gonna blow it.

Me: "Promise?"
Her: "No!"
Me: "No light for you!"

(total darkness)

Truly sorry GumbyCT, but I thought putting three playful clues in that post would do the trick. Or not. Anyway:

1. "and then a click with the right": right click on the image, and select "view image info". Perhaps the file name of the image will be helpful.

2. "Ms. Woolf, I presume." Now what world famous female novelist has the last name of "Woolf". And her first name is . . .

3. Look at he bottom of my "clues" post, right above the quote from Terrence Malick. Over the words "to his purposes". See the tiny blue print? If it's too hard to read on your monitor, left-click and drag your mouse over it, highlighting the text.

Yes GumbyCT, there is a Santa Claus.

Just practicing, btw. When I finally achieve fluency, my goal will be to post totally in NotMuffy Speak, an acronym-cipher language that only six members of our board can decode — and the seventh is hiding in an undisclosed location, somewhere in the heart of darkness, CT.

I must admit that I knew the link was http://users.rcn.com/mcherni/Irene%20hi ... rginia.jpg
I knew it was along the coast. I thought others might have an interest where in Virginia. I thought you could (possibly) provide some details as to the location.

I must admit I was rwong aggin. The are members who like trivial pursuit and others who like csi, guess I'm not one.
I must admit I prefer people who can say "I don't know" when they don't.

I now know you are as helpful as CL&P and AT&T. Or not.
