When you originally posted this, I had a thought and didn't post it.. now I will.
No mention is made by you or the Guest poster about where you are geographically. It occurs to me that during stagnant weather periods, that any smells are trapped (called an inversion or Dome effect weather). The other similar situation we've had way too much of here in Texas is wildfires... smoke, ash and bad smell for weeks nonstop. Depending on where you are and the prevailing weather, that could be a factor.. in which case it would have essentially nothing to do with CPAP. Whatever the cause, I hope it gets better soon for Y'all.

I have the same problem and I don't believe it has anything to do with my CPAP machine. I found this information and suggest doing a thorough search. Here is some information I found.
The condition is called phantosmia. It is not "normal", but it is a named medical condition.
It is usually caused by some sort of trauma or a sinus infection or other upper respiratory illness. Tumors are another possible cause, but not always. Exhaust is not a typical odor to experience, but burning wood is very normal. Exhaust is a close smell.

Could also be nerve/brain damage.

I think you all would be interested to read the info Wikipedia.org has for us. Search "Phantosmia" using Wikipedia as the search engine not Google etc. Good luck all. I'm dealing with this too.

For awhile, I was opening up my PR Sys One's humidifier hatch and setting the water tank on my bedstand. I also covered the top opening of the humidifier with a paper towel to keep out bugs and flies etc. I weighted down the paper towel with a heavy object so it wouldn't fall off. Via natural condensation during the day, some of the water vapors in the cooling tank would leech out extracts from the paper towel and make the water smell like swamp water, it was kind of pleasant in a southern Bayou sort of way but a little unexpected. If I used plastic wrap to cover the tank, there was no smell in the humidifier the next night. I'm not saying this is your problem, since you stated exhaust fumes, bu maybe my example could give you a new avenue to go down for a solution. How do you clean and store your humidifier tank when not in use during the day?

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

For the past 12 days I continually smell exhaust fumes. I feel like my nose is attached to a car tail pipe. It is freaking me out and is stronger than ever. This allergy season has been especially brutal and coupled with CPAP I keep a sinus headache. I haven't had any sinus infections. Has anyone else experienced this while on CPAP? Does CPAP have anything to do with it? I have an appointment with my PCP tomorrow.
Whenever I smell something extremely strong, the smell will often remain in my nostrils for a day or more. I smell it everywhere I go.
You may be getting a strong dose of this odor from the CPAP (defective part) or some other source. If it's been 12 days, something is either reinforcing the smell regularly or as already suggested, maybe you have a sinus infection of some kind.
Pleaase keep us informed what the doc says.

I am not using a CPAP and I am also smelling exhaust fumes every where I go. No one else is able to smell it.
Does anyone have any clues to the reason. Please!

Hi smithgirlzzzz!
A couple of thoughts:
1. It could be that CPAP has made your nose work better somehow - hypersensitive to exhaust which is constantly in any big city.
2. It could be that CPAP has changed circulation in your brain causing the portion which tells about sensing exhaust fumes to fire constantly. Have your PCP check for signs of unstable breathing.
3. Look for toxins in your enviornment. Some of them make changes in the ways the senses work.
I hope you find it - sounds unpleasent. Aroma therapy comes to mind.

I have had the same issue (exhaust fumes) constantly. I have also had a very full feeling in my head, some lightheadedness, tired all the time, but no illness. Not even a cold. I do NOT use a cpap, so I don't think this is something relative to the use of one ... for those of you who are using them and having this smell. It has happened to me before, and it does eventually pass. I tend to think it may be allergy/sinus related. Whatever it is, I wish it would stop!

Note: This thread is over a year old.
The original poster has never returned.
Google "phantosmia".
The smell discussed is NOT likely to ever come from a cpap machine unless it is being grossly misused.
