Idea for heated air
Idea for heated air
This weekend the temps dipped into the low 60's at night. My cpap was sitting right next to an open window.
While, I enjoy a cool summer evening the opportunity to pull up the covers, I did not enjoy the chilled air
that I was breathing.
I was thinking of different ways that I could positon my machine near a space heater, but it does'nt seem
very practical or easy to regulate and maintain.
I know that some machines have a heated hose to prevent rainout, but I was wondering if any are designed
to truly heat the air to a desired temp ?
I believe I still have enough time to return my machine and request something different. I had nasal surgery
about six months ago to open my nose and a chronic 'cold nose' is part of the results.

Re: Idea for heated air
I think the heated hose idea actually warms the air.
ResMed S9 heated hose (Climateline) for those machines and the Aussie heated hose for other machines.
PR S1 machines no heated hose yet.

Re: Idea for heated air
Doesn't your heated humidifier heat the air enough? Have you tried a higher setting? I actually have the opposite problem: the air feels too warm, so I have to keep the humidifier at the lowest setting.

I've been using setting 2 (out of 5). I was being cautious of 'rainout.' I'll test out the higher settings before I go to sleep.McSleepy wrote:Doesn't your heated humidifier heat the air enough? Re: Idea for heated air
I have the Resmed S9 Elite and the H5i humidifier and Resmed climate control line. I was in the mountains this weekend with night temps dropping to 60. Slept with windows and doors to the room wide open, enjoyed that crisp mountain air. Had my humidifier set at the normal 84 degrees and had no problem with cold air or rainout. Hope that helps.

Re: Idea for heated air
Do a search for "Reptile" heater here and you will get a wealth of information on how to build your own heated hose. There is also a company that builds add on heated hoses, http://www.sleepzone.com.au/. There is a US distributor but I don't have it on hand. I have built several of my own reptile hoses. the latest with a controller using a digital house thermostat to control the temperature, and I just love it in the winter months.

LOL I was thinkin the same thing esp. during the summer months. If you can find a way to cool the air, do let me know.McSleepy wrote: I actually have the opposite problem: the air feels too warm, so I have to keep the humidifier at the lowest setting.

ps. I think it is "Repti Heater" cable to search for. I made one w/a timer & a dimmer and has a clock which helps when you wake up. The Aussie hose can be found at cpapusa.com search for Sleepzone.

I have no doubt, how I sleep affects every waking moment.
I am making progress-NOW I remember that I can't remember

If this isn’t rocket science why are there so many spaceshots?

Re: Idea for heated air
Well, I haven't been bothered enough to engineer one (especially now that my nose has been opened up), but since you seem to be willing and able to tinker with electronics, you could build yourself a cooler by attaching a $13 thermoelectric cooler (e.g., a Peltier element, like his one: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... 02-1666-ND) to the humidifier chamber, just don't use water or you might freeze it. The Peltier effect is the simplest, most compact and cheapest way to cool something small (i.e., not a case of beer). If you want to apply this to the hose, you would need some simple heat exchanger to utilize the surface of the element more efficiently.GumbyCT wrote: LOL I was thinkin the same thing esp. during the summer months. P.S. Disclaimer: given that everyone else is heating, I can't vouch for the safety of this, it may well be detrimental to your nose lining and/or lungs.

Nope. PRS1's humidifiers run very cool. They are good at getting the humidity up without rainout but they do NOT heat the air.

Re: Idea for heated air
That's what they say, but I suspect the truth is that it's really the hose temperature that's maintained, and if the air entering the hose is much colder than the set temp, it won't reach the that temperature on the quick trip to the mask. How much of an increase in temperature do you think you need?mrnetwurm wrote:I know that some machines have a heated hose to prevent rainout, but I was wondering if any are designed
