Triation Study tonight - why am I nervous?

Post by Merryj » Sun Aug 14, 2011 12:30 pm

I have my triation sleep-over tonight. why am I so nervous? i wasn't this nervous going for the first sleep study - dunno.

I know that I am stressed about work - and not sleeping well at all - maybe that is playing into it. One question I do have - they said i could take a sleeping pill - but won't that mess up the study?

It might, but then, being nervous could too. It will be very hard from them to titrate you properly if you don't sleep, or don't sleep as deeply as you do at home.

I don't like OTC or prescription sleep aids, so I took 3 mg melatonin about 20 minutes before I needed to sleep. Melatonin is a natural element that your body already produces to help you sleep.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

It doesn't mess up the test.Insomnia attacked with all it's glory for my sleep study. So the sleeping pill work great for my titration test.

MerryJ

I can relate to your nervousness. My titration study is tomorrow night. I think when I did the first sleep study, there was still hope it wasn't sleep apnea. Don't know what else I thought it might be, but it didn't seem so "real" then. Now I've read so much about the issues others have had with DME's, insurance, masks, it feels as if though the game is going to change tomorrow--real decisions will be made and investments will be set in motion.

I feel a lot more confident and yet confused at the same time. There is so much to learn!

I know what you mean about so much to learn! Someone referred to us newbies as "lambs to the slaughter"

I think I have done my homework and know what to ask for - I have 3 local DME's to choose from and I like the folks at my sleep center so hopefully all will go well. Good luck with your study!

Lab sleep tests were hell for me. No sleep.

If you have a chance, get your doctor to prescribe an ambien or something in case you can't get to sleep. Unfortunately, most sleep labs won't give you one, so bring your own.

I wondered about this, too, at my sleep study and titration. A sleeping pill might affect your breathing, but only the littlest bit, I believe. It's more important to actually get some sleep so they can get a rough idea of what levels of air pressure you respond to. The titration they decide to start with could be spot-on, or it could be a ballpark guess. If it turns out to be the latter, you can tweak the titration once you're on therapy. While it's ideal to get the titration right right away, it is quite common to have to adjust it.

Good luck tonight and sweet dreams.
Epworth Sleepiness Scale: 14
Diagnostic study: overall AHI: 0.2 events/hour; overall RDI: 45 events/hour
Titration study: AHI: 6.1; RDI: 27; CPAP pressures: 5-8cm

Not-tired behind my eyes and with a clear, cool head!
