So, I bought a backup CPAP machine from cpapauction.com. It arrived and appears to be okay, but it got me to thinking. When you buy a CPAP, the manual specifically says when travelling with it, you should carry it on the plane and not check it.
The CPAP was shipped to me in its original box and other than the carrying case, it doesn't seem to be very well protected. So I'm wondering how rugged these things really are. Can shipping in the original box really be worse than checking it on a plane?
Even if it were rugged, I'd keep it with me at all times on the plane just so I'm sure it would not get lost.
Dave.

The reason you carry it with you on the plane is so it doesn't get lost ..as in lost/stolen luggage. I had my back up machine sent via mail to me with no problems...but if I travel..it stays with me ON the plane, just like my computer.

They don't tend to drive over the boxes the way they do luggage.

Dave. As Nan, says; the primary idea of taking the XPAP on board (carry-on luggage) with you on an aircraft is to keep it from going to DesMoines while you go to Dallas. Its a convenience thing. It happens. Yes, it could also get smashed in the "hold" area but not likely.
