OW!!!!! My Nose HURTS!

Post by Komodo » Fri Aug 05, 2011 5:54 am

I've been using a nasal mask for the past two years, and had devloped a nice little callus on the bridge of my nose which made wearing my mask very comfortable.

A few days ago, that callus fell off.

Now my nose is KILLING ME!!!!

"fell off" isn't the correct term, it's more like it got "ripped off" while I was sleeping. I now have this huge "crater" where the callus used to be!

I've been on this Forum long enough to know all the ways to prevent getting a callus, and have tried them all, and yes they DO work, but....I'm too lazy to use them every night. Once I developed the callus, all was well!

Anyone else use the "Callus Method"? And what do you do when it FALLS OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just went through that.... a sore on my nose in a new spot after almost a year with the same mask model. I started using a mask liner again, and after two weeks it has healed over.

Just one of those things to make pap use such a joy.....

Some nasal pillow masks don't cross the bridge of the nose. My Opus 360 has supports that run down the cheek to below the nose and the pillows are under the nose, supported by the plastic supports. Nothing over the nose at all.

While I might have a moderately "callous response" to some posts... ( ) ...I just couldn't avoid either the pun or the response of "Ow! Ow!! OW! OW!!"

Sounds as if you need a little big of tape for blisters (molesking, I believe it is called) across your nose when you sleep! At least until it heals a little better.

Do get to feeling better! And don't lead with your nose, next time!

Try liquid skin.

Available at any pharmacy.

Good point. However:

1) Try a little on the back of your hand first. Get familiar with how it works, what it does, how it smells.

2) The liquid and even the fumes are probably rather eye unfriendly. I'd be really careful the first few times and be sure to use the smallest bit I could at a time.

3) You'll want to allow time for it to dry thoroughly before putting on the mask.

4) It might not be very friendly to the material in your mask. Maybe liquid skin, then dry, then some sort of tape over the top of it before you put on your mask.

Put a little cotton ball on your nose/under the mask. Use a fresh one each night. No callous needed and keeps freshly de-calloused area protected : )

The past couple of days I've been using a band aid, and my Pad A Cheek nosebridge protector, but my nose still HURTS!
(I am such a BABY!)

I think Bons said it best:

Have you tried other masks? I don't think a mask should hurt your nose bridge callus or not... the Activa LT has never caused nose bridge issues at all for me... or the new Respironics true blue claims to be less likely to irritate your nose bridge too.

Yeah, I've had about 8 - 10 different masks that I've used and the Comfortgel is the one that fits my face the best.
Quite honestly, I don't know WHY it gives me a callous. The cushion is a SOFT gel, and I don't wear the mask tight on my face. There are no rough, or hard parts of the mask that touch me????

I did click on the link for your mask (Activa LT) and it looks interesting. Next time I get a new mask from my DME, I'm going to give it a try. Thanks!

There are some people whose bodies just simply respond to the least little irritation with a callus or extra scar tissue from an injury more than other people. Just the bodies' natural reaction that happens to be normal for some people.

I was having to much pressure on the bridge of my nose. I loosened the top straps just a small amount and that helped. I have a Zest nose mask which I like so far. Have been on Cpap since May. Be sure the mask is centered properly over your nose. If you use a cotton ball it will only lift the mask which will allow for leaks.

See this nose pad. You can use it for your problem.

I noticed a NEW comfortgel cushion/seal makes my nose sore;
but a spot band-aid on my nose helps until the seal is 'broken in'.
A clear one works nice, and is less noticeable if I forget to pull it off.

Neosporin cream won't keep the sore from occurring, but it can help it to heal more quickly.

Apply neosporin to the sore twice a day.
