Diagnosing UARS

Post by Donindc » Thu Aug 04, 2011 9:59 pm

Hi. I have been away from this board for a while, so treat me like a newbie. I used cpap for about 1.5 years but recently lost some interest since it seems to do nothing for me.

My sleep study showed 13.7 AHI and 0.5 apneas per hour. Two desats - one down to the 80s.

I am sure I am forgetting something, but I am wondering if I have UARS rather than "Apnea." I suppose if I did - then the long term use of the cpap should have helped. It didn't seem to, even after I got used to it and got data that showed very little leaks (within the acceptable limits). So, maybe the thing that makes me so fatigued so much is not UARS nor OSA?

I am thinking of UARS cause I do seem to have issues breathing easily - awake or asleep. One low dose of pseudophed 30mg does wonders for me (clearing out my nose I guess) but I can't use that while I am sleeping, only in the mornings.

I have dialogued a bit with Dr Park on this or another site, read stuff on his site and tried to take in one of his interviews - but I think I am too tired to focus enough to "get it" - so am asking for help to understand.

I have read that it is important to use the cpap anyway for long term heart health, but then some material says UARS is not hard on your heart. I guess desats are, though. I just don't have much motivation to use something every night that doesn't SEEM to help.

Any other info I should be looking at in my sleep study (done in April of 2009)?

Thanks for any help

Fitlife mask, resmed S9 or something like that machine.

Oh, I do use low dose benadryl and nasacort most every night, along with a clean pillowcase to cut down on my dust mite allergies.

Welcome to our little community here.

Please sign up for an ID on this board. Then go into the control panel and enter your equipment. There's a link at the bottom of this post.

On your S9 machine look near the power button, and it should say something like "Escape, Escape Auto, Elite, AutoSet, VPAP Auto, or VPAP S." That will tell you which S9 you have.

To use the forum features fully, you need to register and log in. Once you do that, your username will be in blue and be clickable. Until you do that, your are very limited in what communication can transpire between you and other members.

Please take a minute to go up to the User Control Panel (under search, top left) and then to your Profile and then Edit Equipment. Choose your gear from the pull down menus and the choose to show those in TEXT, not pictures. This will put your equipment at the bottom of every post your write automatically, like mine below. Those with the same equipment can help you better than having to constantly ask you what you use!
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.
