Took off my mask last night

Post by cowlypso » Wed Aug 03, 2011 9:59 am

That was the first time I've taken my mask off in my sleep. I've taken it off a few times when I've woken up an hour or two before my alarm and it's been uncomfortable, but I've always consciously made the decision, looking at the clock and turning my machine off. Last night I had some totally crazy dream, and as part of the dream I took off my mask. I specifically remember that the air was making a lot of noise, so I tucked it underneath something in my dream. Woke up around 7:00 this morning with my mask tucked neatly beneath my pillow, machine still on... Now, if only I could remember what on earth I thought I was doing in my dream, because I'm sure it would have been interesting! So I spent about 2 hours last night without my CPAP. If it happens again, I might turn on the mask alarm, but otherwise I'll chalk it up to stress invading my dreams (over the next month I'm quitting my job, moving, and starting back in school). Anyway, I just found it amusing to wake up with my mask blowing air at the underside of my pillow.

Stress will do it to anybody.

I'm getting ready to move in 2 days.

After 2 years I will occasionally wake up to find the mask off. Sometimes the mask alert beep will wake me, sometimes it doesn't. Doesn't happen often but I might do it once every 2 to 3 months.

Yeah... that's happened to me also. Had no idea what happened at first. Happens every once in awhile. Now I just put the mask back on and forget about it. If it continually happens, then check it out.

I remb when I first started using it that I pulled it off in my sleep. Made a loud swishing noise and scared the heck out of me. Now, I know it's no big deal... I put the mask back on and go back to sleep.

Haven't had it happen yet, but I'm glad to read this, that way I'll know it's quite normal if it does happen.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

I just hope you don't have a dream where you're fighting the facehugger creature from Aliens. It would be bad to wake up and find your mask and machine smashed.

I don't think I've ever unconsciously taken my mask off in the night.
