HI, I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM BUT MY NOSE BLEEDS ON THE BRIDGE. AT THE HOSPITAL THEY TOLD ME TO TIGHTEN THE TOP STRAP, BRINGING THE MASK HIGHER ON THE NOSE & THAT SHOULD SORT IT. BUT THEN PEOPLE ON HERE HAVE TOLD ME TO LOSEN THE STRAP WHICH SEEMS TO MAKE MORE SENSE. LAST NIGHT I TRIED THE HOSPITALS SUGESTION, MY NOSE WAS'NT BLEEDING SO MUCH, BUT I HAD LOTS OF FACE MARKS. TONIGHT I'LL GIVE THE OTHER WAY A GO & SEE WHAT HAPPENS, I SUPOSE IT'S JUST TRIAL & ERROR, IS'NT IT

problems with masks

Post by Mardi » Tue Jan 11, 2005 9:57 pm

I haven't had my cpap for very long (about 4 weeks), but I am already on my 2nd mask and on my way to a third. My first mask was the gel nasal mask which caused sores on my nose as well as swelling of my nose and eyes. I think I had an allergic reaction to the gel. Now I am using the Breeze Sleep Gear nasal pillows and I am still having nasal swelling. Not to mention it is uncomfortable and when I roll on my side it comes out of my nose. I don't know what to do, or what mask to try. I read alot of chatter about the Aptiva. I am not sure if my DME provider has them, but is that a good one to try? If I buy it on the net is there a recommended site? Inspite of the side effects of the gel mask I did have a good nights sleep. I want to feel that way again. Any help you can give me, I appreciate.

Looking forward to a good nights sleep Mardi

thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I did get a new M. comfort full mask from the Home theraphy place and it was still to tight at the bridge of the nose. I asked if it would be ok to trim the nose edge on the outside covering where it was too tight and was told yes that a lot of people trim them. I then asked if it would weaken it and allow it to tear and was told no. Well, I trimmed just a tiny speck off the nose opening and after about two weeks, the mask did start tearing cross from the top of the nose opening. Before it tore I was actually sleeping more confortably and had gone from 2 to 3 hours sleep to 4 hours sleep and starting to feel better. Even my nose chaffing cleared up. Today iused a bitof glue to hold the torn place back together.Tonight i will find out if it holds or not and if the glue bothers my face.
Thanks again. At least now I know its not just me having the nose problem. Good luck to all of you.

Mardi, if you want to keep trying the Breeze/nasal pillows (my favorite mask of all), this might help:

1. Get the next larger size nasal pillows, even if the person who fitted you for the pillows says the size you have now is exactly right for you.

2. Rig up something so you can hang the main air hose over your head. A hook on the wall behind your headboard, a clamp on the headboard, a bungee cord - whatever. Figure out a creative way to hang it so the main hose is held up overhead - think of being a fish on the end of a slack line - you'll be able to turn over and move your head without the weight of the main hose pulling on the head gear and tugging at your nose. No matter what mask I wear, I route the main hose up overhead to keep the hose from pulling on any mask.

3. Try putting the side straps of the Breeze down considerably lower than where they are normally shown in the ad pictures. Wearing them down low (as shown in the "Lower" picture that I retouched) keeps the Breeze very steady for me. I'm a side-sleeper who turns a lot from side to side during the night.

If you can't get comfortable with the Breeze, two other very good masks you might want to try are the Activa and the Swift.

Finding a mask that suits well can be quite a journey! Good luck.
